KA-Bar/Dozier Folders...

Just bought one at AG Russell. No sooner did I get it home when my nephew scooped it up. Its riding in his pants now.

I figured, "Hey, no big deal. I will just start carrying this clip point that I bought with it." My brother in law is carrying that one now.

It sure is hard having good family that take care of you.

Anyway, I have a drop point in my pocket right now that I have been carrying daily for the last 3 or 4 months. When compared with other knife steels, this steel sucks. It is nowhere near hard enough to keep an edge for long.

The steel is not that great to begin with, but does not rust. It will, however, stain if you run into the right stuff like that which I work with.

I have carried all the different blade shapes, and tell you right now that as soon as I get another thumb notch it will be going in my pocket in place of the drop point. This is simply b/c I like the thumb rest that much.

I do not like the skinner to carry, as the hump just does not ride right in my pocket. All the others work great as EDC.

Even with the down side to the steel I have to level with you. These knives are $20, come in several different useable styles, and are a very nice size for EDC. Not too big, but not too small.

They also have an extremely good blade/handle ratio that makes these knives very quick if you know how to push that thumb stud.

They are also totally ambidextrous. You can swap the stud and clip.

If you are looking for a light, inexpensive, useable/abusable knife that looks good, works good enough, and will not hurt you if you lose it you have selected the proper.

If you go to a better steel it is going to cost you more. Just buy 3, and put in your truck along with a stone. You will get use to it.

Then, when one gets lost, you get another one and forget about it without crying. The Sebenza/Benchmade/whomever crowd will NEVER be able to make that claim.

Just remember that you are getting a $20 knife. It is not going to even begin to compare to the high fit/finish/performance of the above mentioned knives.

Let me know what you get, and how well you like it.

Hope this helps.

Yes, indeed it helps...a knife shop at the local mall has, the thumb notch folder on sale for around sixteen bucks. (seems hard to pass up.)
Thanks Terry !!!

You can't beat that deal. For the money these are one of the best deals in knives right now really. I was on Bob Doziers forum and someone asked him what he carries and he said he has one of those Ka-Bar folding hunters in his pocket just about all the time. Great EDC beaters, that if you beat up, or lose no big deal. Just order another or already have a spare in the safe at home.

Have one in my pocket now, my EDC Utility knife. Fine little knife, good quality at a great price.

I've got three of the KB Doziers--two with the thumb stud (is this what you mean by thumb notch?) and one with the hole in the blade. Of the three I like the hole in the blade version better. Nice blade shape too. For what you pay you get a pretty darn good steel, adjustable pivot, reversible clip, and like has been said before, you won't cry too much if you lose it.

The stud is located on all models except the one with the hole.

There is a new model with a drop in the back of the blade where the serrations are on the other models. It is a nice place to lay your thumb.

Common to all of these KaBar Dozier folders is a nice hollow grind that will allow for a nice thin using/ cutting edge. Even with AUS steel, it can still slice and cut as well as higher cost "exotics" such as BG42, 154CM, and even S30V to name a few. AUS' edge holding may not be in the same ballpark though. But as already mentioned many times, it is a great value for a sub $20 folder. And yes, I do carry the thumb notch model almost on a daily basis. The hole opener and its pointier clip point blade suits my uses better.

It's worth $20 for sure, but their heat treat isn't as good as Cold Steel, Spyderco, or CRKT on the same steel (AUS8). You can get it sharp, but not as sharp as if it were a bit harder.

I keep one clipped to my sunshade in my truck. Hasn't been used for anything heavy duty, but its a wicked sharp knife for 20 bucks that locks open pretty solid. I haven't cut enough to have to sharpen it.

I have one that I carry IWB over and above all the other ones I carry. I have the thumbhole one. Actually, I have two of those and one of the thumbstud drop ponts. Found that the thumbhole one was handier for what I do. It's one of the ones that constantly stays in the EDC rotation along with my SAK :D The thumbstud one is also pretty nice, but doesn't get used that much. Aside from my Buck 110's (I have two - but one is the 100th Anniversary one), it's so far the only ones in my collection that I have two or more of. It's one of those ones that that's just a plain great value for the money.
