Ka-Bar Dozier lock failure

I'm not that familar with the knife in question, but it it a real or a knock off?

edit ok I can barely read the dozier symbol, but I don't see a double ground model at NGK for example.

These are reputable guys, I think they'd know if it was fake.
It was Ka-bar Dozier Thorn

I pesonally rather like Ka-bar-Dozier folders, handled one in a knife shop and was impressed.

The thumbstud's ok - is stop pin is hidden?

<edited> A-HA! there was some complaints…

Yeah, If you do a search you will find nothing but positive things to say about them, I don't own one but I've never heard of a lock failure. However, I have handled one and liked it very much.

Thanks for the info.

Is the stop pin recessed into little pockets in the handle rather then bolting all the way through?

That is the Dozier Thorn tab lock folder. I have one. That can be repaired also. I've done three for forum members. If the lock got tweaked it will need replaced though. Chances are that happened because the pivot pin got loose and allowed the space between the body of the folder and the blade to widen sufficiently to allow the lock to enter into the space.

All three of these I worked on were pimped modified knives the owners didn't want to lose though. Ka-Bar has an excellent warranty. Call Carol Deckman at the service desk there and work it out.

I have fixed those by placing a stop pin behind the lock where the blade stop would normally be. It also keeps the lock from going all the way across the back of the folder. These are not the most heavy duty folders made by any stretch of the imagination. They are in line with the gents folders made by W&H among others.

If you are interested here is a pic of how I repaired the three I worked on for forum members including my own. This makes the locks much more stable under severe stress.

Note I ground out the blade so it will still close over the new stop pin threaded into the handle. Then I placed it so it physically touches the lock at about the mid way point as it goes across the back of the blade at the interface. Essentially it is still a tab lock using the same factory lock which is unchanged but the lock has a stop behind it to add support under load. You might also note that the one in the picture is mine and I took off the top wing of the blade because it was right where I like my thumb to be when using the knife.

Its about a 20 minute job.
