I'm thinking of buying a Ka-Bar D2 Impact, the one with the clip blade shape and partially serrated, not the spearpoint. I like the full tang construction and the micarta grip. This knife must be one of the strongest out there...

Any advice or experience with this one? How is the edge out of the box of Ka-Bar's? Give me your thoughts!;)

dunno about K-Bars D-2, but the D-2 i've got is *tough* and very nice as a slicer and light (green wood) chopper. The sort of knife you don't sharpen in the woods cause it stayed sharp. The sort of knife you want to pack a lunch, and have the day off, when you DO need to sharpen it. Own diamond (DMT) hones, or have it done for you, it's *tedious* to sharpen D-2, and that ain't a joke.

I have the knife your talking about. I picked it up off eBay last spring for $75. Sadly, I haven't really had an opportunity to use really use it. Initial impression is that it's well built, has a good factory edge, with nice scales even if they are a little on the small side. I've got big hands so the small side is just a matter of perspective. The sheath was OK. It needed to stretched to get the snap to close around the handle.
Sorry I couldn't help you any more. I'd say if you've found a good deal on one it's worth picking up, especially since they discontinued that model.

Here's a pic of the Kabar next my AR15 and Dan Wesson 1911, of which I do use fairly often.

Thnks for your reactions! I DO have diamond sharpeners, so no probs. I've knifes made from 440, 420HC, ATS34 and even S30V. I choose now for D2, just for having something different.
And Geeeee, Flashpoint, nice gear!:rolleyes: In The Netherlands were I live, that ain't possible. We just beat the crap out of them! :D

I have one and really like it.One tough knife.Don't worry it's not "brittle" in any way.The only complaint i had was the thumb ridges went too far down the handle and can dig into the hand with hard use.I ground mine off now I'm happy with it.

Thnx, savagesicslayer! What about the initial sharpnes (right out of the box) of this blade?

I own a couple D2 Kabars.

The fixed blade is the new model USMC, the seven inch blade. It was shaving sharp out out of the box, but I thought the edge was thick, and the sabre grind was rather shallow - a bit of a sharpened prybar. But it came sharp, and it's solid.

The folder is a 4053, a USA, aluminum scaled liner lock. The edge wasn't as thick, but the grind was even shallower, and it wasn't particularly sharp at all.

Kabar makes good knives. But if you're looking at dropping significant money on a high end, I'd stick with a dealer who will handpick you one to your taste.

Thank you Nick! I already ordered the knife for a fair price. Here , in The Netherlands, we don't have a knife culture at all. There are only a few shops were you can buy knives and the prices are absurd high over here. To give you a idea: for the Ka Bar extreme D2 (the one with the 7" blade and black eagle sheat), I have to pay € 325,- !
So I import my knives directly from the US. Also the current exchange rate makes importing even more interesting....
