I just received it today and I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised..
I paid 68us$ for it and since I live in Japan, where imports tend to be rather expensive, I think it was a great buy:)

It came hair popping sharp right out of the box, so no complaints there...
I just had to see how good a chopper it was, and as luck would have it, I had a nice supply of 2" green bamboo....

It didn't faze it one bit, while I have to say that my technique sucks, the knife didn't, it made short process of the bamboo.
After that little exercise, I was actually a bit surprised to see no damage what so ever to the edge and while it did dull a little bit, it could still shave hair!

Stabbing the tip into a 2x4 posed no problems either, it tore big chunks out of the wood, but the tip showed no damage at all.

The coating didn't show any "real" wear, while you could tell which part of the blade I had used, it was just the sap from the bamboo.
No doubt that in due time the coating will wear off..how much though remains to be seen.

Ergonomics too are (at least for me) great, while it is a beefy blade, it doesn't feel too heavy or awkward in the hand.
Some maybe, would like a more tip heavy blade, for greater chopping abilities, but personally I like it just as it is.

The only slightly "negative" thing I can think of, is the sheath...while it does the job, it is nothing special...I would much prefer a nice kydex sheath and I might just get one made for it.
Ohh..some might dislike the fact that it is made in Taiwan, but honestly I don't thing that's such a big deal...it sure seems that their QC works:thumbup:

This knife will for sure accompany me on my hiking trips, it will without any doubt make a great camp knife.

So, if you are looking for a cheap, tough, large knife look no further!

I agree with everything you said:thumbup: I'm very pleased with mine and it has seen extensive use as of late:D

I ordered one on Ebay a few days ago. A big chopper was what
I wanted, and I was torn between the Ontario Marine Raider,
the Ontario SP5 and the Kabar Heavy Bowie. I was going to order one
of the Ontarios because they were made in USA. After seeing Noss's
video on knifetests.com and reading about the spotty quality control
of the Ontario knives I ordered the Heavy Bowie. I prefer to buy
American made knives but lately I've seen some Taiwan made knives
that are excellent quality. Cliff Stamp's review on the SP5 breaking
relatively easily didn't help much either.

It is really a fantastic knife, I love my Heavy Bowie. This knife started my collection of big 10" blades, and though it is the cheapest, it remains one of my favorites. In my opinion one of the reasons why it is a great knife is the excellent balance. No matter what you do with it, it always feels and handles like a much smaller knife, which isn't a bonus for chopping but for overall versatility. I often use my Heavy Bowie in the kitchen, thanks to the full flat grind it is also a good cutter. The coating on mine has worn off a bit, but it only gives the knife some character, I love it even more with 'battle scars' so to say. Enjoy your Heavy Bowie and beat it hard!

I don't have the large bowie, only the short version. The short version is amazingly light, very comfortable to hold. As the other posters have said the it also balances very well. I am glad that its bigger brother seems to share the same attributes. Both the large and short versions are a steal at their price IMO.

" look no further"...look no further than what?? I don't see nothing....where's the pictures...for all I know you guys are imagining all this.....:p

It's a great knife indeed, but the sheath is indeed nothing special. I would prefer full leather sheath.. And I think the handle guard is a bit too wide (from the spine angle). The spine could also have just a littlebit thickness to give it more weight.

I love the big Kabars fixed blades. Great knives and great prices. Too bad the smaller USMC knives seems to have handles made for 5 year olds. Very small imo.

I had always wanted a large bowie knife, and while this one wasn't exactly what I had in mind, it still remains the best knife purchase I have ever made. Sharp, fast, strong and durable, I never venture into the woods without this on my hip. Like many other's, I too have complaints about the sheath. What bothers me the most about it is the plastic D ring at the bottom. I used that and some para cord to form a leg strap to prevent the knife from flopping around; a solution which just about negated all of the sheaths negative attributes. Unfortunately it snapped off.

Does anyone know where I could find a Kydex sheath for this big beauty?

It's an absolutely amazing knife. Was surprised when I took it out on a hike and batonned with it made fuzzsticks it performed so well. Definitely one of my favorite carbon steel knives. I got a kydex sheath made for it and now it goes with me whenever I need a reliable blade

Where'd you have the Kydex sheath made? That would complete the package for me.

I forgot to mention how blown away when I chopped in a water bottle in half with this knife when I received it. Best quality to price ratio in my opinion

Is anyone able to compare it to the BK9?
I was looking at both and the made in...USA vs Tawan helped make my decision but I'm curious about comparison opinions because it looks sweet
