Ka bar re handle

Ive got a WW2 ka bar fighting knife the guard says KA BAR USN MK2 and it was my grandpas. So what happened to it was, hence the USN he got the handle wet. And as we all know stacked leather handles and salt water dont mix. he fixed it by putting an entire roll of electricans tape on it. Well that just not cuttin the mustard anymore and i want to re-handle it. but i dont know if i want to use the stacked leather or wood or what i want to use. Also i know that kabars are supposed to be pinned at the end of the tang this one is not but the pommel isnt budging. thanks for the help!!
