I'm looking for a new knife for skinner deer and possibly wild boar. I've checked around and haven't seen anything that looks great from KaBar. I know they used to make a good looking skinner, Model 1444 or 1447, ut that is no longer in production. Can anyone suggest a good knife in the KaBar line up for processing large game?

I've never used a large knife to process game. Usually something in a 3-4" blade. A large bowie would be way outside of my comfort zone. I'm afraid I'd end up puncturing the stomach and / or the intestines and ruin a lot of good meat.

Narp. And I love KA-BAR.

You want a skinner that will be with you through it all......

Get a Dozier.

My Columbia River has seen it's way through many a tough hide.....begs for more. If your gonna cut shields off of Russian descendants, cut that thin skin on a whie/black tail, and still beg for more??

Get a Dozier, cry when you pay, and cry when you hold it.

Shit's steep in cost, but pays back on flesh.

rkmoore

It is always control of the tool you have and always one's comfort zone with such tool

Ya, i had a Dozier once. I only owned it for a few days and donated it to a good cause. I gotta say it was the nicest knife I've ever owned by a long shot. Definitely not in the budget anytime soon.

Not much of a haul......but Afican Blackwood and D2......yuuuup.

Buying my Dozier hunter got a little dicey. :D

I think the BK-17 is a fine knife for game processing. If you want a little more belly, have a look at the 16.

I picked up a dozier/boker skinner that looks a lot like yours Guyon

A good option that does not break the bank

Black micarta with 6 pins, Aus-8 with fileworked spine and a tooled black leather pouch sheath......pretty awesome for the $50 or so I paid!!

It was a good sale from a brick and mortar that was not ordering it anymore or discontinued. I actually bought 2 and a sweet little walnut handled version of doziers personal carry from boker.

Anybody seen these, my googlefu sucks or I would post pics

Really nice for the money

This is what I came here to say.

If I had to choose a skinner from the Kabar line, that would probably be my first pick.

Totally, and at around $45 its a great deal AND made in USA!
Has a wicked look to it, I came about a hair from grabbing one a couple of weeks ago but got the BK15 for the same price, Sophie's choice there lol.

GAME STALKER! Why didn't I think of that? It looks like it would be just about perfect.
Thanks Guyon, Moose and everyone else that pitched in!

Hmm, Father's Day or Easter gift to myself? :D

At that price point I'd try to slip it under the radar :D

I know what you mean, it really is a good blade at that size/price point. For me, its a blade I recommend to friends when they want something full tang, and "normal sized". Its stainless as well, so they can treat it like crap and not have to worry about it.

The ergos of that handle area great (like the rest of the JAB/ZK line), but the handle scale material is just too slick for me. You may want to think about making some Micarta/G10/Wood for it (of course try the stock handles out first), but if it were me, I'd be trying to add some micarta on there.

Good luck with the purchase :D.

I'll give the factory scales a try but if they aren't good enough I'll probably see about making some out of leather or scrap wood.
