Yesterday evening my new KA-BAR Smooth Ram Horn Trapper was waiting for me when I arrived home from work. I’ve learned through different sources that these are contracted out through Canal Street they also make this exact same knife for More Maker in 1095 steel. This KA-BAR version uses 440C and is one of my favorite steels like 1095, both just great user steels.
When I open up the black box it came in and got it out of the paper wrapping the first thing that jumped out at me (another first) is the ram horn handles! Oh my, this is some seriously pretty stuff, and now I see why it is becoming popular along with elk stag! I open the blades and the next thing jumps out really nice symmetrical edges! The only thing to do with this knife is rub the handles down lightly with baby oil, wipe it off with a paper towel and start enjoying! The walk and talk is spot on about a consistent 5 on both blades!
I didn’t get to do a more thorough examination until I got here to work this morning. After looking this knife over in the bright office light the next thing I see is this knife has the least machine markings I have ever seen on a production folder, the only two I can see are one on each blade in the pivot indention area! This knife has some of the best fit and finish I’ve seen yet on a production folder just about as good as my S&M Sowbelley, and NF #85! The construction is all stainless as much as I can tell, unless the bolsters are nickel. Nothing real fancy here no long pulls or bolster lines. There’s one more feature I just have to mention, and that is I really like the KA-BAR dog head shield! To me this is a better looking shield then the Canal Street and even the Moore Maker. I borrowed the below image from my buddy, and if I can remember when we get our new net service I’ll post images of my new knife on this post in it's place. I may be prejudice but I think mine looks a little better. My KA-BAR has three burn lines going across the shield side and two across the back side other wise the contrast is well matched up.
Like GECs this is one heavy duty built knife, and for a price most anyone can afford! I was wanting one more premium trapper but with a little better steel and different handle material and I couldn’t be happier as of now!
