Ka Bar Steel Question

I thought we had a Ka Bar forum, but could not find it.

Anyway, a fellow Rat has a Next Generation Ka Bar with the 7 inch blade and no serrations up for sale. It is a user, and he does not recall what steel it might be. It does not have the dark blade that I believe normally accompanies the D2 steel.

I believe that most likely it is 1095, but would like to get it if it is actually D2. How can we tell?

I have posted a link to his sale below.

Thanks for the help.

Have you considered sending the seller an email? :)

If I'm not mistaken, the Next Generation Kabars are made of 440A, nothing close to D2.

Ka-Bar has a really great customer service rep. One of many I'm sure but write this woman and ask her your question. She has been really cool to deal with and has helped me on two occassions now. She usually responds very promptly.
Don't expect a reply until next week though. Carole Hnat email chnatatalcasdotcom

If it's one of the early Next Generation Kabars, it's made from Sandvik 12C27, a nice Swedish stainless, known for it's very fine grain structure. The newer ones are made from 440A.

Am I right to say that the Next Gen was never made in 154CM?

It is 440 A hardened to 55-57.

How well will that steel hold its edge?

Thanks.
