I have a Ka-Bar USMC plain edge ( model No.1217 ) on the way to me and I just wondered if anyone has experience using a Spyderco Sharpmaker with one . Would the 40 Degree angle be ok for touching the edge up and keeping it sharp ?

Thanks

Dunc

40 should be good, I did maybe 10 40s and a few 30s. You'll know when the edge starts shining up and sliding like glass. You can also sharpie the edge so you can see where you're hitting.

Be careful if it is a coated blade. That epoxy is a pain to get out of the stones sometimes.

Thanks , I'll coat the edge with a sharpie first and see how I get on  I've heard alot of good things about this knife .

40 degrees om the sharpmaker work great on my KaBar...and all my other non-kitchen knives, for that matter.

I think the Sharpmaker will work much better than my Lansky...angle changed all crazy by the belly/tip and now the bevel is a much different shape up front. It's sharp as hell, just looks weird and is less than ideal.

I used to have a Lansky and I too experienced that on some blades aswell . I do find you get the same problem with the sharpmaker but not as bad and its easier to control and adjust .

Thats because the blade is thicker on kabars near the tip so the grind is wider even if its the same angle.

So it arrived this morning and its everything I hoped it would be . It wasn't very sharp so I put it on the sharpmaker and noticed it had a bit of an uneven grind but I overcame that and it will now shave hair . The tip of the blade was a bit more difficult due to the thickness like we talked about earlier . Is it common practice on a blade of this style to not have the tip as sharp as the main part of the blade ?
