I tinkered this one....sorry bout the poor picture quality, but I'm still massaging this one so I'll do Mo Betta when I am done.
Already I laugh at my effort, but I've learned a lot, and it is still very solid and usable....it will go camping and hiking with me and I'm sure will serve me well.
I stripped the black coating off the blade, replaced the leather washer handle with micarta, Corby bolts, ground off the top side of the guard ....leather sheath is next.......
Love this 1095 steel:thumbup:

Sweet Mod!

I like it! Wish you could just buy it that way.

(psst. It's 1095 Cro Van, not 1095. not the same thing. KaBar 1095 Cro Van is the closest thing to the old Cold Steel Carbon V available on the market today.)

It sure shined like a new dime after years under that coating:thumbup:

very nice, personally i would have used a more colorfull wood but i still like that mod a lot.

how the hell did ya use the corby pins through that tang?? Cant seem to wrap my noggin 'round it, how wide is the tang? Was it a pain drilling through it?
Kabars are stick tangs arent they?
sorry for all the questions
Either way looks really good:thumbup:

Ivan, the tang part of the blade is not hardened, so I was able to cut off the butt end, about 3/4", with a hack saw, then drill through the tang with my trusty/crusty ole table top drill press very easily.
The tang is 1/2" wide.

I'll be doing more of these....I'm thinking Osage next....or maybe Ivory Micarta.....or maybe Cocobolo.......Bocote??....maybe......one of each??:)

Got the pants made...

Rayban how did you get the coating off? Sanding? I would like to do this but I dont want to damage the blade. Sorry I dont mean to sound ignorant, but ive never modded a knife before.

I used Scotch Brite wheels on my Dremel tool....made very short work of it and does not scratch the blade.
Hand sanding would work too, just use maybe a 300 grit to start, then with 600 you'll get a pretty nice satin finish look.
Keep going up in grits till you get the finish you like

Great mod! the knife looks astounding. Kabar should have a version like that available! Also, the sheath is top notch. Kudos.
