Ka-bar Warthog versus Ka-bar Heavy Duty Warthog

(My first thread. Please tell me, if anything is not up to forum standards.)

I have purchased the Ka-bar Kukri Machete and put it to intense use. Apart from a chip - half a millimeter wide, 6mm long - the edge has done very well and undergoes re-sharpening at the moment. No problem with the sheath either. And I do like the rugged look the machete achieves after some use.

The 'net told me in its wisdom that the Warthog makes for the perfect addition, but some more searching showed critical opinions. It seems that there were some quality and design problems, but I do not want to prejudice.

Can someone knowledgeable please compare the Warthog (early issue) and the Heavy Duty Warthog?

Hans, welcome to the KABAR forum.

I will have to go into more detail later,if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Basically, the new Heavy Warthog is larger, made from thicker stock, with a different handle. Perhaps Toooj will along shortly.

Once again, welcome.

The old warthog is made just like the fighting/utility knife and is much smaller, thinner and lighter than the heavy warthog. They look similar but they are really totally different animals. Here's my post from the thread I did when I first bought it

I'm very fond of the original but they're actually very different animals. The original is a general slicer/utility type blade whereas the Heavy is a bit more of a short chopping knife. It feels like it could help with gathering firewood at camp but in a package I could actually carry on my belt. I have a BK2 and BK9 which are close to the same weight but the BK9 is a bit long to have on me all the time and the BK2 you have to choke way back on the handle with a two finger grip to chop with. If you paired this with a tweener, a necker, or a Mora you'd have a heck of a pair. Throw in a multi-tool or SAK and you're all set.

Here's a pic of both along with a BK2. The heavy warthog is right about 1/4" thick and makes for a good chopper.

Well, thanks for the kind reception and the answers.

The Heavy Duty Warthog looked like a different kind of knife to me, compared to the original Warthog, and it is good to know that looks do not deceive here.

Oh I've been soooo close to getting one of the old warthogs. Really dig the old styles with the f/u handle. Your a lucky man bighoss.

They're great. They might be better without the guard but I don't have the stones to hack it off. I don't really use it much anymore even though it's defiantly not mint and not worth much. It's more the fact that it would be dang hard to replace if something happened to it. I'm waiting for the BK10 to come out next year. I think that will make a nice substitute.
