Does anyone know of an effective way to attach a full size KaBar to the shoulder strap of a maxpedition jumbo versipack? I would like to have the knife mounted lengthways along the shoulder strap.

I have both the Kydex and Eagle cordura sheath to choose from.

Eagle

This will make the knife more accessable rather than being worn on my belt under a coat when hunting/camping/hiking.

Any ideas?

Old School - OD 100 mile and hour tape, duct tape, black electrical tape, big rubber bands, or sections of bicycle inner tubing. I prefer the "special forces" reusable camo fabric tape with the heavy duty Post-it type glue. You can't tear it, and it's still good for something when the glue loses strength from dirt contamination being reused for months.

The problem is connecting the sheath at the best place on the strap, securely, and in such a way that it doesn't damage it, is removable, and adjustable. Pretty much leaves out most mechanical fasteners other than the old bayonet clips or new molle types, which could just slide down or be oriented 90 degrees off.

It's always been a challenge, and then after a while, the novelty wears off from loose sheath straps, lost knives, and commando wannabe comments. For most of my hunting/camping/hiking, I use a clip folder that I trust won't get lost and use it for the quick stuff, and leave the big knife on the belt.

Unless a really nice buck happens to pass directly under my tree stand and I feel like going mano a mano with the blade . . .

I suggest instead of attaching it vertically, that you attach it horizontally. The bottom of the sheath attaches to the MOLLE points on one side and the top to MOLLEs on the other side (just above the top flap). Use short MALICE clips or the old fashioned ALICE clips.

This has several advantages. The knife sheath doesn't slide all around, but is still readily accessible. And it is less noticable, less fantasy-commando looking.

In my experience this doesn't interfere with the top flap appreciably.

Do you want the sheath to be easily removed or can it be more or less fixed. If the former I can suggest using some heavy duty velcro (much more professional than tape and the like), but you need to be handy with a needle and thread, and you also risk damaging both the strap and the sheath if you mess it up. But I've done something like this successfully in a similiar situation. And obviously it would be more practical with the eagle.

Otherwise, I have the kydex sheath, and it seems that with all the holes it has it would be easy to lash or strap it to the pack strap, no? Maybe use quick-release knots to get it off in a hurry.

But yea, I hope you're hiking/camping alone, cause otherwise the commando comments will be merciless ;)

The problem with lashing the kydex sheath to the pack strap is it would slide down to the bottom of the strap. I suppose I could experiment with this idea a bit though.

I'm sure you could make the lashing work. Consider that in the worst case (there's no way to lash it to prevent the up and down movement) the pressure between the strap and your chest will help keep things in place.

In addition, the kydex sheath comes with this clip/buckle (what are these things called anyway) at the top that you can thread a strap through, and it looks like this is meant to stay fixed relative to a strap when the sheath is under tension, i.e. if the sheath was trying to slide down...so maybe the shoulder strap can be threaded through this?

you could make velcro loops to attach through the slots and belt loop.

I like Rat's idea.
Last time I was at REI, I saw some velcro straps in a few different legths. They were next to the repair shop IIRC. If you don't sew, this might be an option.

gotta go with the ever popular duct tape. not pretty but functional and durable not to mention low buck. but be prepared for strange looks.

Hey there XMP. If I understand your suggestion correctly youre not talking about attaching to the MOLLEs near where the shoulder strap connects but you mean to the MOLLES on top of the flap? My Maxpedition doesnt have this set up. Just velcro on top of the flap. Do you and I have different versions of the Maxpedition?

This is what I have.

Actually I am talking about the MOLLEs where the shoulder strap attaches on each side. The sheath sits across the top of the flap horizontally, with the belt loop attached to the MOLLEs on one side and one of the loops on the back of the sheath to attach to the MOLLEs on the other side. I use old fashioned ALICE clips to do this.
