So after doing some research, I saw that a bk2 has some cutouts on the handle!?

is that on the camillus version or the current kabar version?

Appreciate the help.

Kabar. Its called the GEN2, has the tang extension, and the cutouts. If you are so inclined, there is quite a bit of room in the middle of the handle, should you want to pack in some small kit stuff.

Toooj's knife design program, allows you to shift the weight and balance around, all the while changing different aspects of the blade. The cutouts + Toooj = probably the only way a BK2 could get better.

Better balance. Lighter weight. Storage space. Helle's yeah.

damn! How hard is it to find one that has a solid tang? Im sure gen2 is plenty strong enough, but I like a solid handle.

They are out there. I would suggest calling the dealers you usually use, and asking them about them.

The handle is no weaker for it, but it makes a huge difference in the weight and balance.

I prefer the Gen 2, but I would like a Gen1 to do some modding with.

I bought my gen 1 10 years ago and it is still going strong.I've found no reason to get a gen 2 yet.The gen 1 has a solid tang, but is a shade thinner at .210" compared to .250 for the gen 2.Please correct me if I'm wrong.

The gen2 is excellent, I have never heard of anyone ever having a problem with the handles being weak if thats what your worried about...

i can't say i've heard of anyone breaking the handles yet.

there's been like a handful of broken blades in 30 years, mostly from abuse.

the lighter handles means it chops that much better.

if you really want solid tang, get a Camillus model (or earlier) or be VERY specific when you question the buyer.

I have one of the 1st Gen KA-BAR BK2's with the solid tang. I would actually prefer one of the 2nd Gens. If you get your hands on a 2nd Gen and just can't abide those cutouts, hit me up for a trade. Mine has seen some light use but is no worse for it.

the skeletonized handle (when done properly) isn't any weaker than the solid one. just look at the arches on bridges, buttresses (hehehe), etc. ever tried to crush an egg with both hands surrounding it? same principle of load balancing...i didn't sleep at the holiday inn last night but i almost majored in architecture so take it with a grain of salt :D

p.s. ethan himself said it actually costs ka-bar more money to do the cut out compared to just leaving it solid! so why did he design it there? it improves the balance of the knife without sacrificing structural strength...what can we say, ethan is such a perfectionist.
