New from KABAR is the Thorn folder by Bob Dozier. Hopefully this is the first in a series of Dozier collaborations! Spaerpoint blade is 3.25" long and is hollow ground out of D2 and has a full length false edge, which is not sharpened. The handle is 4" long and is machined out of aluminum and is coated with Alumite, which gives it the flat gray appearance and has a slight bit of texture to the touch. Pocket clip is 420J2 steel. The Thorn's lock is Dozier's own Tab-Stop mechanism, which is a variation of the liner lock®. It doesn't use a stop pin but instead the 420J2 lock bar contacts the entire width of the blade tang. There's maybe 3/4" of solid contact. No blade play with this one! Ok enough blabbing....I know you guys wanna see pics :D

I've got mine right here by my mouse. It's hard to flick my Thorn and navigate the website with the same hand, but I'm learning :D

This knife is a jewel. It seems smaller than the measurements indicate, very compact, but a great grip: fingertips on the clip, thumb on the thumbstud, flick! and the blade snaps up! Depress the tab lock and the blade drops free to the detente about i/3 down, then you can close it the rest of the way manually. This release is as smooth as my Sebenzas. (I didn't lubricate it to get it this smooth, just cycled it about 20 times, and it got extremely cooperative!)

The only "complaint" I had was the sharpness of the edges, like inside the handle. I took a ceramic rod and buffed them smooth in a couple of seconds.

It's so light that I carry it clipped to a shirt pocket.

Where can we get them (via the net) and how bout a ballpark price ?

TIA

Gig - right now only A.G. Russell has them, he has purchased the entire first production run of these, I think. List on these is $170, though A.G.'s price is a bit higher than what other net retailers would let them go for. If you can wait a while, the Thorns will enter the general distribution pipeline and poke their way out to all dealers.

That is a sweet looking little knife. Does anyone know how well the integral guard functions as a "flipper"? TIA.

Brian - forget about it ;) The ball detent on this one is strong, it really holds the blade in the handle. You can really feel it grab the blade and pull it closed.

Thanks, Dexter. I was afraid you might say that. :( This one will go on my "handle-before-I-buy" list.

my brother bought one from ag,and i will probably buy one sooner or later.
its a great little knife, overall, but its not for everyone.

very well made, good blade steel...very nice...

You're welcome, Brian. You'll love it for sure. Don't overlook this one if you are looking for a medium sized EDC folder

Dennis, there are no liners. That's one reason it is so lightweight. Just the aluminum handle slabs, 1/8" thick each, not a bit of play in them, very rigid, The tab lock is screwed into a recess on one slab. The screws show through on the outside, flush, under the clip, sort of like the Microtech microbar.

Yech.

Nothing like having a good 1/2" worth of knife sticking out of the top of your pocket. Why do companies insist on impressing us by designing some sort of wacky clip that navigates around the pivot? Just mount the thing up high and go over right over it!

Sheesh.

Good thing it's removable.
