A couple months ago I was breaking down some boards, white oak and pine 1x6's, with my fairly new BK4. I got the BK4 in one of the package deals with a big bowie knife, but had never used it too much. About 10 minutes into chopping and splitting I heard a buzz, i initially thought the handle was loose and vibrating. Maybe 2 swings later the blade broke in two. I put the two parts in the sheath and finished the job with my trusty BK2. A couple months went by with my broken BK4 sitting on a shelf. I figured it was time so, I wrote a note explaining what happened and mailed the knife to Kabar. Three days later I get a phone call from Kabar explaining they no longer have the BK4 and would a BK7 be an ok substitute. Three days later UPS dropped off my new BK7. Good job Kabar. Thank you.

Yay! I’m so glad that you got your knife back. Just out of curiosity, do you have pictures of the damage?

You’ll love the BK7 (in case you don’t already have one). Truly a trusty blade for a good warrior! :)

Considering the chopping job, I might have asked for a 9 instead.
But glad they took care of you!
I still need to get my package-deal 4 out of the box. Should have used it this weekend to break down some oak and ficus trimmings, but the 20 is so handy I just went with that. (Worked a treat, of course.)

That’s nice customer service. Way to go Ka-Bar!

Broke a BK4..... Wow. Where about did it break?

Ka-Bar is definitely a great company with outstanding customer service - tip of my hat once more.

You must have got the one in ten thousand or so where everything goes wrong from a singular defect in the steel to a botched HT, resulting in the blade having 1% of its proper toughness. I would’ve pushed for a bk21, though, since it’s closer in design, and the bk4 isn’t available anymore! But since It was part of a package, they must have come up with a value closer to what you actually paid. My bk20 came with the snody neck knife, so I still don’t and probably won’t ever own a 4 til they makem again!

Whether or not Kabar took care of me, I did not want to show the broken knife. I hate the often, not using the right tool or not using the tool right, pissing matches. As such, I did not take any pics of the broken blade. It broke in the middle where the blade begins to widen going toward the tip. it was mostly a clean break except for a long splinter like projection near the spine. My guess was there was an occlusion or crack in that area.

Your going to love the 7

Does Kabar require that you send a broken blade in for replacement, or does emailing pics suffice? I’ve never had one break, but I did have an issue on a non-Becker they asked for pics. They are super nice whenever I’ve called or emailed them though! The 7 is my 3rd favorite Becker, very useful design for edc!

Ka-Bar is a really good company run by some really good people; the fact that they make knives - really good knives is a bonus. The fact that a good company, run by good people, who make good knives makes Becker knives is a win-win-win-win!

they usually want the broken blade, not only for "equivalent exchange", but generally to try to study the blade and figure out why it broke. abuse is not common, and outright fraud is more rare, but it happens. if it was a HT or stock issue, they can figure that out, and they keep track.
