Hello there I'm an F.N.G. here ,and have some questions about a Kabar knife I've recently acquired .I think it's called a" hump back" it's a fixed blade about 8" over all blade length is 4" from guard to tip, false edge is about 2 3/4" on the handle there is a bear that is standing and looks like it's about to take a swing at something ,the shield is pinned to handle. The handle scales are yellowed M.O.P. with a colored liner which I believe not to be original. I have only seen one other Kabar like this and it had a Sambar Stag type handle. The knife has Ka-Bar stamped with a date of May 1926 on one side ,on the other side is Union Cutlery ,Oleans N.Y. . Both side have been buffed out too often has the stampings are getting thin. Can anyone tell me what I have here, I would like to rescale it as the M.O.P. is disintergrating and crumbly. Can I send pics in this forum? Anyway Thanks H M

Welcome to Bladeforums!

While paid members can upload pictures directly from their computers, anyone can open a photo hosting account.
I use www.photobucket.com . Download your pictures to the account and they give you a URL for each picture.
Use the fourth URL choice, with the tags already in place. Copy & Paste that in your post here.

I may move this to Bernard Levine's Knife Collecting & Identification if no one at KA-BAR Knives has an answer available.

H.M.

If you can post pictures via a photo site with a link, I'll help you. However, we do need pics.
Here are some hints: Side shots next to a ruler. White or Tan background. Shots of knife opened and closed. Close ups of all of the stamps/etchings.
Hope this helps.

Hey thanks I have pics taken with a Kodak Digital and for the life of me I can't get them out of the Kodak software to my e-mail or any other place .I'll see if my 9 yr old nephew can help me. Thanks for the reply ! HM

HM,

You can also send them directly to me: pault@ka-bar.com.
However, half of the fun is the interaction with the other members on the forums.
Good luck with the pics.

H.M. does your knife have an aluminum pommel?? If not the knife is a model called "Minuteman" in the old KA-BAR brochures. The model number was 281 in stag and 781 in pearl celluloid. The different colored liner on the scales is correct. These are fairly rare knives and hard to find in fine condition. In my opinion they are among the coolest looking fixed blade knives ever made. You will need to remove the scales, though, as the crumbling celluloid will spread a gas that will infect any other celluloid knives you may have. Maybe Paul can post a photo from one of the brochures.

Gunsil - you mentioned the 281 Minute Man was fairly rare in fine condition. Any idea of the fair value for one as shown in the link?

jth1957 we are not allowed to discuss values unless you have a gold membership. I really like your knife and would be interested in making a good offer, let me know if you might be interested. See if you can PM me, I'm not sure if you can without a paid membership. I was unable to send you a PM, likely because you are not a paid member. Please call me at 845-480-5172.
Regards, Gunsil
