I really like the kabar marine combat/utilty knives. I am planning on getting one and I noticed that you can get the origional style with A kraton handle as an option. So which would be better for all around outdoor use? This will be my one and only fixed blade. Also should I go with the next generation instead?

i want to start by saying that i have no experience with ka-bars but i say go with the older style.i dont know, maybe its just that its been a proven knnife, used for years and years.i guess im just old fashioned.i dont know.
on the other hand, these new ka-bars are made up of more durable (is that a good word?) materials.no leather handles to rot or mildew, and the blade seems more impervious to rust.
you should just look at both kinds, old and new, compare them, and make your own decision.i think that no matter which knife you pick, you will be happy with your choice.good luck.

Leather, if you treat it. Kraton is water resistant, but degrades when exposed to DEET based insect repellants.

I like leather. It absorbs shocks better and will likely last your lifetime and someone else's if properly cared for.
