Hello there, fellow Kabartans. A friend of mine wants one of the big Mule folders for Christmas. I saw them recently on a jaunt to the NEX with my friend in the military for very reasonable prices. I want to know your thoughts on these knives. I've not handled or owned one myself.

So, what do you all think? Tough? Beefy? Look elsewhere? Any and all thoughts (and pics, a'course :D ) welcome. Thanks!

I was really interested in this knife for a while, but decided against it for some reason. I think I found it too big and heavy... but then I just bought a Buck 110 two nights ago, so clearly I'm over the size/weight thing. I hadn't heard anything bad about these knives, all good. The Taiwan thing still kind of bugs me though. Kind of.

Got one 2-3 years ago and still like it. Inexpensive, tough...very tough and easy to get super sharp.

Thanks, guys. Didn't know that about the different blade steels. I'll see if I can find one of the FRNs in the configuration he wanted instead.

YES. You absolutely need to get the AUS 8 model.

They have been around here and there for a while, and solid performers.

Think, basic folding knife. Lockback (tried and true), FRN, and AUS8, like everyone has stated. My biggest complaint was the fact that its a sheath folder, I prefer a clip, but I carried a Gerber GatorII for years, and really got used to the sheath. The HT on the AUS8 is some good stuff too. Taiwan is a hangup I have, but the quality is far beyond what most folks think Taiwan can give us, but its really good quality

For the money, they are worth it. Last you or your mate for years and years to come.

Good knives, only problem I have with em is that the people around here want $110 each for em, and $25 for the sheaths

Army surplus stores in my area carry mainly el cheapo knives, and the Mule is the only really decent folder they have, and I'm pretty sure they get em off the internet and resell em, so not too many are coming in, supply and demand intensified.
They are my only local option for knives, too, and that's why I love the jungle site so much.

Ok, so the Mule has just made it to the top of my buy list again. I just returned a knife, so I have about $50 of "knife money" to burn. What's with this lock problem I've been seeing on youtube? Is this over hyped BS, or is there something to it?

" over hyped BS" is a good description.
Over and over I have read posts here on BF from people I trust who have found the knives to be big, tough and reliable.

(That's why I don't go off site to get reviews. I don't know the people who post YouTube reviews. For all I know all they want to do is make a name for themselves by trashing a perfectly good product. I know the folks who post here. Been reading their posts for years. You get a sense of who is BS'ing and who is not.)

Good point and good advice, knarfeng. Thanks. When I have some free time (and cash... ) I'm going to see if I can find some Mules.
