I just saw that on Tomas' site for the new Big Brothers...anyone know what's up with that? :(

Tick, tick, tick....moving back to NV this weekend ! The Countdowns on...:p

My guess is that it is because it is a double edged knife. It's been a while since I looked into it, but I think double edged knives are still illegal here... at least to sell.

I called Kabar and asked, the gentleman told me they cannot sell because he believes that it is because of the serrations on the back, making it a double edged knife.

Thing is, there's no law AGAINST double edged blades that I can find, but then again I've only been reading the penal codes of CA yesterday, when I saw that the big brother won't be shipped to CA.

EDIT: here are the "generally prohibited weapon" categories of CA:

16590. As used in this part, "generally prohibited weapon" means
any of the following:
(a) An air gauge knife, as prohibited by Section 20310.
(b) Ammunition that contains or consists of a flechette dart, as
prohibited by Section 30210.
(c) A ballistic knife, as prohibited by Section 21110.
(d) A belt buckle knife, as prohibited by Section 20410.
(e) A bullet containing or carrying an explosive agent, as
prohibited by Section 30210.
(f) A camouflaging firearm container, as prohibited by Section
24310.
(g) A cane gun, as prohibited by Section 24410.
(h) A cane sword, as prohibited by Section 20510.
(i) A concealed dirk or dagger, as prohibited by Section 21310.
(j) A concealed explosive substance, other than fixed ammunition,
as prohibited by Section 19100.
(k) A firearm that is not immediately recognizable as a firearm,
as prohibited by Section 24510.
(l) A large-capacity magazine, as prohibited by Section 32310.
(m) A leaded cane or an instrument or weapon of the kind commonly
known as a billy, blackjack, sandbag, sandclub, sap, or slungshot, as
prohibited by Section 22210.
(n) A lipstick case knife, as prohibited by Section 20610.
(o) Metal knuckles, as prohibited by Section 21810.
(p) A metal military practice handgrenade or a metal replica
handgrenade, as prohibited by Section 19200.
(q) A multiburst trigger activator, as prohibited by Section
32900.
(r) A nunchaku, as prohibited by Section 22010.
(s) A shobi-zue, as prohibited by Section 20710.
(t) A short-barreled rifle or short-barreled shotgun, as
prohibited by Section 33215.
(u) A shuriken, as prohibited by Section 22410.
(v) An unconventional pistol, as prohibited by Section 31500.
(w) An undetectable firearm, as prohibited by Section 24610.
(x) A wallet gun, as prohibited by Section 24710.
(y) A writing pen knife, as prohibited by Section 20910.
(z) A zip gun, as prohibited by Section 33600.

There may have been a time that double edged= dagger or dirk in CA, but currently, it is:

"16470. As used in this part, "dirk" or "dagger" means a knife or
other instrument with or without a handguard that is capable of ready
use as a stabbing weapon that may inflict great bodily injury or
death."

By this definition, a screwdriver in your pocket can be construed as a dirk or dagger. Luckily, it is only illegal to conceal, and legal to openly carry:

"21310. Except as provided in Chapter 1 (commencing with Section
17700) of Division 2 of Title 2, any person in this state who carries
concealed upon the person any dirk or dagger is punishable by
imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year or in the state
prison.

21390. The unlawful concealed carrying upon the person of any dirk
or dagger, as provided in Section 21310, is a nuisance and is subject
to Sections 18000 and 18005.

20200. A knife carried in a sheath that is worn openly suspended
from the waist of the wearer is not concealed within the meaning of
Section 16140, 16340, 17350, or 21310."

It's for the children. Denying law-abiding citizens the right to own inanimate objects is totally going to stop a criminal from doing something bad, one of these days. :jerkit:

I added 'the "generally prohibited weapon" categories of CA' list, and there's still nothing on double edges.

"As a company policy, the KnifeCenter does not ship knives or swords other than kitchen cutlery to New York City."

I think it's just NYC, and not statewide.

Wow, I have bookmarks that are illegal in California. That's extremely open ended to say the least.

Nothing surprises me anymore. I'm still trying wrap my head round Cali vigorously regulating feral hog hunting. That's bordering on madness.

It's only illegal to conceal within your person when you're out and about. There's no law against possession of it.

Pfft. I'm surprised CA still allows ownership of steak knives.

"Please call the California Bureau of the Peoples' Right to Illusion of Safety. We will send someone to cut your tofu pork chop."

Also on Tomars Kabars, I see all the new "zombie killer" stuff is SK5 steel, IMPORTED.
I was only luke-warm for these to begin with. Now I'm ice cold.

don't know what Sk5 is, we were told 1085, which is a fine tough steel. with good heat treat, there's nothing wrong with that at all.

a number of KaBars are made on taiwan, good factory, top quality, carefully monitored by KaBar. they just don't have the capacity here. nobody does.

I don't care about the Zombie knives, honestly those are funny, not my cup of tea, the green reminds of another, way stupider, more repressed forum I once belonged to though.

Sucks about the interpretation of that law though oh well, glad I am getting out.

As for SK5 I didn't see that anywhere about the Taiwan stuff. I really like the bigger stuff in 1085 its tough and reminds me more of 5160 in actual use.

It ORIGINALLY said NY State ! I called them & was told No shipping to NY State. I was VERY disappointed & told them so. I am sure many others have called as well. They must have realized that this was a BIG mistake & changed it. We have no such laws here in Western NY State ---YET ! :D But i have no doubt that our new Gov. is working on it as we speak. :D

I would prefer to buy American, but I'm not against buying something made in another country if it's made well. If I can't find something I want or need made in America, I start to look elsewhere. Neither of my two most-used knives came from here. One is from El Salvador, the other is from Switzerland. My favorite pistol was made in Croatia. How many of you carry a Glock? SAK? Maxpedition stuff? How 'bout Japanese or European cars? My point is that even though some of Ka-Bar's blades are made in Taiwan, they're made to Ka-Bar specs, and that's good enough for me. Would they be that much more awesome if they were made here in the good ol' US of A? Yes, but they're not. Sorry about the mini-rant. Hope no one gets too angry at me.

Quality was or is never really the issue. My play money goes to American products when it can. I have stuff made overseas, Maxped, XD, and what not, but, if I can help it, I try to keep my money in the borders of the USA, all the way through. American Companies, American products.

Everyone will have their opinions and likes, its what makes the world spin.

I tried to order from Knifecenter a while back and got an email they won't ship to New York State. If that's changed I'm glad because Western New York has no laws against ownership of any knives, only carry. (Not kidding, you can even own switchblades and gravity knives as long as you don't carry them, and even then you just need a valid hunting or fishing license to carry them to and from hunting and fishing. I looked up the laws.) New York City though is ridiculous and Cyrus Vance Jr. is an idiot who needs to get beaten by Kniferights in court so badly.

EDIT: New York state in particular has strict laws regarding our shipping products to their state. We do not ship locking folding knives, fixed blades or swords to New York State.

Taken from Knifecenter's legal statement. I really hate New York.

Same thing they told me. It was first posted about a month or so before Christmas when i noticed it. I was planning on placing an order. But i will NOT order from them anymore, because of this. Same thing with ammo. No law on the books, but many refuse to ship at all to NY State. :jerkit:

I think that many of the knife companies and retailers are refusing to sell to NY and CA because you never know what they are going to do next. Saves themselves a LOT of grief. Heck, is NY still trying to outlaw folding box cutters? For crying out loud. :jerkit:

If you don't like it that retailers won't ship there, you could always move to a state that is friendly to guns and knives. :D

I've got several friends that are FFL dealers and they ABSOLUTELY refuse to ship to NY or CA. One of them is a Class III dealer. He called and talked to someone at the CA DOJ about shipping some ammo. The person he talked to said it was fine. Just to be sure, he called back about 2 hours later and talked to someone else. That person informed him that what he wanted to do would result in a felony charge against him!

If the people "in charge" don't know what the laws are, how can anyone expect the retailers to know?

I don't blame them one bit for not wanting to deal with the crap.
