They could also be carrying Western States Cutlery / Western Cutlery / Western knives. A lot of the stacked leather knives of the 30s/non-war 40s/50s Kabars & Westerns look alike from any distance at all. Example - the Kabar 1233 and Western L40 are virtually identical in size and shape. You have to have them in hand to readily tell the difference - tang stamps and pommel attachment - 1 pin or 2. The Western L39 is a little larger but looks like a 1233 from a distance.
When I refer to model numbers on Kabars and Westerns, I'm using the "modern" model numbers. I don't know when Kabar officially started putting model numbers on their knives (I'm guessing 60s or even 70s). Western didn't start putting model numbers on their ALL their knives until around 1954 (per "Knifemakers Who Went West" by H. Platt, son of the founder and pres for years).
