Why does Kabar use 1095 for the traditional 1217 type blades, but use 440A for the Next Generation style?

Maybe they figure "the Next Generation" wants stainless steel. For a large heavy use stainless blade that might be expected to see a lot of impact work vs. a lot of fine cutting chores, 440A is not a bad choice.

I ain't a "Next Generation" kind of guy. I'd take the 1095.

Wasn't the "Next generation" 12C26 or some such swedish steel? Then they have the Extreme in D-2. Joe

Well, I think I'm going to have to have a 1217 and either the Next Gen or the Extreme.

More is always better!:D

Make sure to treat that leather with some type of conditioner! It only took 7 years for my handle to start shrinking :)

It isn't a bad choice and the choice is probably a result of the fact that Cutco, the other side of the company, uses 440A. There is likely a lot of it in stock all the time.
