Is the 1095 cro-van steel in which Kabar knives are made of any good? I have had my Kabar for a long time now and just now looked into what grade steel the blade is made of. Just curious.

It is good steel. 1095 is the classic carbon steel. It has decent edge holding, and great strength. It is ideal for the utility knives that Kabar makes. It has been doing its job for many, many years.

what about cold steel's 1055 carbon steel? are they any good? just curious also.

was wondering whether the steel is good or the heat treatment is the trick in making their tough blades

Funny you should ask, I just bought an updated Ka-bar in desert tan. I took it out back, hacked through two branches with a 2inch diameter. After that, it still shaved my arm hair. Ka-bar is good to go; their reputation doesn't come for free.

"The Ka-bar is kind of like the 1911: your grandaddy carried one, your daddy carried one, and even though you can have the latest and greatest thing out there, you know that it'll get the job done and come back for more."

I agree with michaelmcgo, except that Ka-Bar uses 1095CV steel. That means it is an alloy steel with 0.95% C, and some Chromium and Vanadium added to improve the properties, rather than a plain carbon steel.

There is no bad steel, just steel that is a bad choice for a specific use.

1095CV is an excellent choice for this use.
