Sometimes a guy has to get a toy for the fun of it, what better than a large knife/small sword? The Kabar Swabbie.

This thing is a beast, 1/4" thick, and 12.5" flat ground blade. Remarkably balanced(balances at choil), lightweight in the hand and nimble. Sharpest Kabar ever received from the factory, maybe the sharpest knife I've ever got from the factory. It comes with a small Acheron fixed blade, some odd feet of neon green cordage and zombie knife patch. I think it would be neat if they included other gear like neon green firestarter, sharpening stone, etc or just went all the way and included a survival kit, of course this would drive up the cost.

I just had to fondle and admire it a while before use. First up is a comparison picture with knives I thought were big before getting this one. Swabbie, Machax, Marine Raider and Randall Bear Bowie.

Here is a top shot of the blade, check out the, ehhem*thinner tip*. Very pointy, I could definetly see this knife as some sort of "fighter".

First up I did some carving with it. Like I said previous it's lightweight, nimble in the hands and very sharp so it does quite well at carving. I do have 2 issues with the knife that I'll have to fix. Biggest issue being the top guard, when choking up on the handle to carve it can dig into the webbing between your thumb and finger, starts hurting after a while or you put some real grunt into your cut. Second issue are the handle scales, just like the adventure knives they have hard little knobbies all over them, they will wear your skin and cause blistering, they are sanded down easy enough though.

The knife really excels at chopping. It would chop better if it was more forward heavy, but I reckon it's good as is. Not as good as an axe, but acceptable anyway.

Made quick work of the smaller dry stuff.

Check out how deep it bites into green wood with a moderate swing.

Finished chopping the green piece. When you're chopping you gotta mind the tip way out there, end up eating the ground like I did.

Batons fine too. Had to beat it pretty hard through the green piece, all twisted up and whatnot.

Last task. Fishing spear, these are fun to make, work fairly well. The long blade makes it a bit more difficult to do most jobs, really have to be mindful of the tip. Overall it was fine for making a spear.

My overall opinion of the knife is very good, it does have a few problems such as the scales and the top guard, fixed easily enough. It's also very large and heavy so I doubt I'd make it my "bushcrafting" knife but it is a real fun toy and good conversation piece. It can work as a machete in a pinch.

ETA: After playing with it and admiring it more since this review I've come to really like it, very impressed with it. Kabar obviously put alot of thought into this knife.

Looks like a great knife. Really nice pictures and write up. Thanks!

I wouldn't mind having one, but the BK9 is about the biggest I can easily carry EDC style. And it's more than likely that I'd wind up catching a lot of pirate jokes, and it's really hard to make people walk the plank around these parts.

I've been eyeing the Swabbie since it was announced. .

Thanks for the great review and pic's!

Nice review and pics. Gotta admit that when these were announced I doubted I would ever see one with actual wear and tear on it.

Thanks guys.

I put wear and tear on all my knives, gotta earn their keep.

It really is a fun knife/mini sword. Crossing my fingers that kabar decides to make a longer version.

Lovely to see one being used. Inspired my to dig up mine and do some stuff with it. It reminded me that I'm still more of an ace guy but it worked. I'm thinking of stripping the blade though...

Why did I open this thread? I don't need another knife do I?
Yeah, I think I do. I need a Swabbie.:o

I've turned into an axe guy lately too, bud, but there is something so satisfying about a short sword/knife. :D

Yeah, I think I do. I need a Swabbie.:o

Yes, you need one, everyone does. Even my lady has shown interest in owning one, she's into all that zombie stuff. lol

That handle :barf:

I'm even remotley a fan of the handle designs on their ZK series, I have the war sword and would love it if not for the handle

Actually I was very happy they came out with handle scales this grippy. Quite the luxury for a chopping blade. I like it. Like it a lot. One of the best handles I've had on a blade, honestly.

@ machine: I hear ya. It's satisfying for sure.
