Kabar Turok vs Steel Will Argonaut 800

Hi Guys,

Was looking for a second opinion on which knife I should buy. (Just signed up so if these kinds of posts are frowned upon, I apologize). I am currently deciding between the Kabar Turok and the Steel Will Argonaut 800. Love the philosophy of use and specs behind both. Whichever one I get will be supported by a tomahawk so no need for heavy chopping. Does anyone have any experience with Steel Will? They're a relatively new company but all the information I have is from Gideon'sTactical.

Thanks in advance!

Im not familiar with either of these knives. After looking at the specs I would probably go with the kabar. Their 1095 crovan is excellent. I personally would go with the carbon steel over the aus8 stainless in a knife this size. If you are considering other blades, the kabar bk7 is a fantastic knife (about the same price if you shop around). Becker knives are well liked by many people in the bladeforums community.

I'd love a becker one day but I don't feel like going through a resheathing process; budgets fairly limited.

Becker resheathing process for the budget minded in 8 easy steps....

1. wait for Saturday
2. spend about an hour hopping around local yard sales or thrift stores
3. buy pair of worn out work boots for 2.00
4. hit local hardware store for 6 Chicago screws for about 0.50 each
5. cut top off of boots, discard worn out bottom section
6. lay knife over leather salvaged from top of boots, trace and cut out
7. use small nail to make holes, use Chicago screws in holes to hold cut ends of leather together
8. post pictures of your new sheath on bladeforums you made for 5.00 and an hour or two of time

Get the Turok. Jesse Jarosz is a member here and makes some amazing custom folder and fixed blades. The Turok is his design under the Kabar name.

Check out the Kabar forum here. Lot's a threads on the Turok.

Aside for the facts it's an great knife, I would much rather support one of our own here at BF.

Of those 2 I'd probably pick the Kabar.

I don't care about the 1095 bit. In fact, I'd dislike that because it corrodes far more easily. I'd expect the 1095 of the Kabar to be a bit tougher, but if as you said, “supported by a tomahawk”, that would not be sufficient compensation. Actually, I don't tend to break knives so that is seldom a factor. As they are both about the same modest hardness I would have thought the Steel Will would probably cut a bit longer for the kinds of things I'd cut before needing sharpening. Bit close to call that. Ultimately, it would boil down to design, and I think the Kabar is a more useful looking design.

That said, if you had said Steel Will Druid 220, that would have been a game changer. For my tastes that is a better steel than either of the above, run a bit harder, and a far more practical looking handful in terms of design. I'd actually like to play with one of those somewhen and compare it to some of the familiar stalwarts. Could be a budget giant slayer.

I'd go with the Kabar Turok. 1095 Crovan is great stuff. Also... Turok was such a great game on the N64... bit o'sweet sweet nostalgia.
