I was thinking of getting a standard kabar usmc plain edge knife and was just wondering what are your thoughts on it?

i got 1. i'd say it would fall into the same category as a buck 110 and sodbuster; you gotta have one !!!:D

It's a good all around fixed blade, has great value, and a taste of historical tradition. There are, however, much better survival fixed blades out there, albeit for more dough.

I've got a few of these, and they are all hard users. Built tough, but need to be sharpened to get optimal results.

the ka-bar d2 is still my 1st choice for a general outdoor knife. maybe it has to due to fact i carried it for 4 yrs. in marines. not the d2 but the standard issue. after seeing marines snap steel bands on ammo boxes ,pry and do all kinds of rough use i never saw one break.i can afford any knife i want but for dependibility ,utility, & the one knife i would want above all others in gone to hell situations give me the d2 ka-bar. i have customs, busses, many knives.i guess the fact i never saw one fail but we did'nt place the ka-bar on top of a pound of C4 . i have sharper, stronger, prettier, greater edge holding, but no other one knife gives me the confidence level of the ka-bar.

When you were in the marines.Do you still use the masterkey system or are there new ways of breaching now?

I have a really old KBAR that I kept with me most of the 20 years I was in the Corps. It's a tank! Sharpened it on rocks, cut with it, slashed with it, pried with it, hammered with it, threw it into to trees (younger days) and it's still in great shape!

wreakager i served from 59 to 63 . no breaching this is not the section to discuss this but i'll try. in fact this info is so much how it was in anchient times i'm going to go to community & post if you want idea of pre m16 days. follow if you wish .

but for the money,it's a good choice right?

Are you kidding? This is probably the best fixed blade knife you can get for that price. I love mine, I've got three, although to be correct, one is an ontarion Spec Plus, from Kabar I have one plain, one serrated in leather and krayton handles. I use them for everything especially for chopping down bushes and vines at work and they always get the job done. Buy this knife, it will suit you.

Here's my beat up one, this thing has been beat on, to the point of being abused and it's still working great. The coating will wear with hard use but it's not that big a deal.

I got one a year ago which had been in the leather sheath for along time and had rust on the blade however it cleaned up well. It did quite a bit of camp chores and held a good edge. It has alot of nastalgia with it which is neat. I got rid of it because I needed the cash and I was in the army anyway(:)

I have a couple and they work great for me, I don't have the D2 though but I really want one.
