i recently found an old kabar in my father in laws tool box. it is marked kabar on one side and olean n.y. on the other side. is thier any way to tell if this might be an original issue? he was in ww2. any help will be appreciated, thanks.

I believe one way to tell if it's original is if the sheath says USMC on it than it's NOT original issue. The issued knives had plain sheaths. If I'm mistaken, anyone, please let me know.

i have an original ka-bar you atre correct about the sheath.....ka-bars are great knives....i love mine

H..mmmm. I'd hold onto that knife. It sounds like the "real deal". It probably doesn't have alot of $$ value, but lots of historic and sentimental value. My Dad was also in WWII and we are still finding things of that era that are amazing us---dog tags, photos, ribbons, etc.

Your Father-in-law's Kabar sounds like one to hang on to - My Son borrowed mine about 8 years ago and won't let go! - The Kabar's marked "U.S.M.C. Olean,N.Y." are about the WW II vintage - and from what I remember the sheath is plain.. not marked. It is a real piece of work and the tempering of the blade seems to be done in zones so that there is some flex in the spine yet hardness in the edge - Mine was tuned like a razor on both edges and took lots of abuse from me before my son got it! Enjoy it they seem to go for about $125.00 to $150.00 at gun shows in my area.
