what would be the best treatment for preservation and protection for the leather handle on a new kabar?
 
Wow, no responses? :confused: Perhaps some of our leather-smiths out there could lend a helping hand. I've heard of a sealer that is put on the outside of leather to prevent scuffs and stuff, but that's all I know.

Hopefully this bump will get some people who know what they are talking about in here.
 
i know i use a thick yellow cream on my ariat cowboy boots...
not sure the name but i imagine you could get it at any western store.
$6 tub has lasted me 2+ yrs
 
regular old mink oil on my WW2 Cattaraugus 225 Q, ive heard of a product called sno-seal (???) but i think it will darken it up dramatically, the mink oil seems to do a good job though, you really shouldnt have to do much though unless it gets constantly wet. Sometimes the leather handles can dryout and shrink which leads to a rattle you can then apply the mink oil/whatever treatment to swell the leather and tighten the fit. My 225Q is 60+ years old and still in great shape and i'm willing to bet that it wasnt fussed over too much in its life until it got to me:D

Randall recommends saddle soap. That's it.

Considering that a pretty respectable percentage of their reputation was built on knives with leather spacer handles, they ought to know best.
 
Either mink oil or Sno Seal will do an excellent job on the leather handle I use both on my motorcycle leathers. I ride year round in Washington and my leathers are going on 25 years old. Twice a year spring and fall I take my leathers to a laundromat throw my leathers in a dryer until they are nice and warm apply Sno Seal or MInk Oil than toss them back in the dryer repeat until they can't absorb any more. ( I do clean the dryer and leave a note on the dryer ). So I tried it on my Ka bar, put it in the oven on very low heat no more than 250 degrees, oil repeat. May have to do that every few years
