Kagas Katne Question

Just got my first HI for Christmas (I'm spoiled and I know it), a kagas katne. Beautiful blade and just an amazing little knife to behold.

My question concerns the handle:

Is that bone or plastic? It was warm to the touch.

It ain't plastic and I suspect it is horn and not bone.

I'm sorry that an animal passed on for my new present, but it sure looks and feels great.

If an animal died it was not to obtain the horn,
so it would be more of not wasting the horn.

Do water-buffalo shed horns?
Or are the horns cut off like my grandfather did his cows
to keep the animals from hurting each other?
Or are they just being butchered for meat?
