Kalamazoo motor getting hot

Hello,

After doing a lot of research I bought a Kalamazoo 1X42 sander a few weeks ago. I am going to be using it to sharpen knives primarily but other things around here also.

I have been using it quite a bit taking my time and learning as I go. Yesterday I was sharpening several knives and since I was taking my time and looking at the blades every couple passes the sander ran for about an hour except when I was changing belts.

When I got done, I noticed that the motor was very hot. Much too hot to keep my hand on it more than a second or two.

Is that normal for these? I looked it over and everything seems to move freely. The top pulley was warm but not hot.

Thanks,

Joe

Check to see if the cooling fan in the motor housing is turning and un-obstructed first. If that checks out okay you should be fine.

Not using a 'dimmer switch' for speed control, I assume? Those can burn up motors that aren't designed to be used with them (and most aren't).

I don't have this set up with any type of dimmer. Straight off an outlet in my shop.

That's good. The topic of using dimmers for cheap speed control comes up occasionally, which is why I mentioned it. The 'hot motor' is a classic outcome (or worse, like a dead motor or smoke/fire), if the dimmers are used on them.
