I have heard this is a pretty good black finish. Does anyone have any experience and or know where to get it? Thanks in advance..

Kalgiard is now called Gun Kote and is available from

KG Products

I've used the black, OD green and Anthracite. The stuff is sprayed on like paint then baked in the oven. The parts must be degreased and bead blasted first. The hardest part is spraying the stuff on without getting ANY dust from the atmosphere on the parts... I've never managed to get this 100%. A spray booth would be great.

Let me know is you give Gun Kote a try...

I have a couple 1095 blades that I'm gonna put gunkote on. I used it once on an old pistol. I cleaned it up, had it blasted, and then dipped the parts in the can of gunkote. It came out great except for a couple finger prints. This time I'm going to pour boiling water over the blades and not handle them barehanded afterwards.

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

Hi all...

Gun-Kote is a great product and I would recommend it to all knife makers who would like to try a baked-on finish...

Easy to apply with an air brush or spray gun...Lay it on easy at first and let it dry between coats...You can then put on a thicker coat without runs...This paint goes on very thin...

Let dry for a while and the bake at 300 for 60-90 minutes...Gives a very "forgiving" and protective finish...Try the grey...my favorite!

I've used it and several products like it. Works okay.
IMHO, powder coating is the way to go. No solvents needed and alot less problems with dust contamination.
Eastwood Products (Eastwood.com, I think) sell the gun and powders.
You still bake it on. Very durable finish.

I ues the Eastwood set up as well. Its a hot epoxy powder coat. In fact I think Trace was the one that told me about it. It seems to be about the same powder coat as all the popular black knives have....

Yeah Rob is right I have used one of them for quite some time. For the money its a simple fast black finish.. I have heard good things about Kalgard, but I think I agree with Kit, powder coating is probably as tough as your going to get in a black finish.. Thanks for the input again..
