Kali as taught by Bob Breen

Hello!

I am new to this board, so let me introduce myself: I am living in France since a few weeks (I am from Germany), I am new to the Filipino martial arts, and I would like to take up Kali training.

There is a Kali/JKD school in my area, that offers Kali instruction in the Inosanto lineage. The head instructor (Eric Laulagnet) is certified under Ron Balicki and Bob Breen and trains regularly at the Bob Breen Academy. One of the assistant instructors is also certified under Bob Breen.

I have taken part in two training sessions and liked the training a lot. However, as a novice, I can not really judge the quality of the techniques that they teach. Therefore I would like to ask if anyone could give me an opinion on Bob Breen and his brand of Kali. Can I expect to learn realistic techniques that would help me if I ever have to use them on the street? Or should I better have a look at a different Kali style (there is also a school that teaches Inayan Eskrima, which I haven't checked out yet)?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Marc

HI there,I have had a good friend who's trained at the JKD Bob Breem academy in London and he's had a very positive experience there. Very practical oriented course. Also know from other WC teachers he's well spoken of. Hope this helps reassure u!

If you can find out the name of the Inayan instructor, let me know and I will ask Suro Inay about him. Inayan is a great system. I love it.

Hi Steve!

Thanks for your answer and sorry for the delay - I hadn't expected any more answers to my post and I have read your reply only today. Thank you for offering to ask Suro Inay about the instructor here! His name is Stephane Fernandez. I am quite sure he is genuine, because he is also listed on the official Inayan website.

BTW, I went to a trial training session at the Inayan school and I am really enthusiastic about the training - it was great! I think I will go to one more trial class, and then I will very probably sign up.

I cannot talk from personal experience but I own the entire set of tapes By Bob Breen, and judging from what I've seen, he use alot of B.S. techniques, expecially with sticks. Techniques are very coordinated but with NO POWER. It seems that the guy never sparred hard in his whole life. Please do yourself a favor: buy the tapes from Dogbrothers.com, find a training partner and get real. You will not waste your time.

Bob Breen hosted Danny Inosanto in 1979 and afterwards and has been training for 30 odd years. He's trained hard, and has the cauliflower ears and gimpy leg to prove it. He's an excellent reality-based instructor, and unlike your comments mine *are* from personal experience.

Videos are to demonstrate technique. They don't necessarily have to be all rock and roll.

Lastly, personally I find it offensive when someone on the internet tears down someone's ability based on a passing aqquaintance with videos, and reccommends their own style as 'the real deal'.

I can only recommend that if you're ever in the UK, you should pop into Breen's gym and tell him that most of his stick techniques are B.S and he has no power. See what he does.

Mr. Bob Breen is an awesome FMA Instructor and a friend of Inayan Systems International (as he was a dear friend of Suro Mike Inay). You can't go wrong with him or his program.

Also Stéphane Fernandez is an authorized Inayan Federation of Eskrima Instructor under Inayan Systems International. He is very qualified and a great guy all around. He has ISI's full support! He can be reached at: fernandez@inayaneskrima.com

Best regards and good luck on your search!

Thanks for the reference Masirib!

Good to see you hanging around here.

Mabuhay ang Inayan Eskrima!

Just one quick question...
Seeing as a martial art tape sometimes costs $50 a piece, why on earth would you own ALL (I repeat...ALL) of Mr. Breen's tapes if you thought he sucked? Were you just wanting to make sure he sucked? Do you enjoy spending money. Maybe you should watch the tapes again and learn how to block so you won't have any more hits to the head that make you act foolishly.

I have never trained with Mr. Breen but I heard that he is dang near the best in the UK.

I take exception to Inayan's post that Inayan instructors are readily accessible. He posted on Eskrima Digest that a person didn't have the right to contact Guro's, etc. and really trashed a person badly when it didn't look like he had any input to begin with. Being nosey I guess. It was shameful and turned me off about discovering what they are all about. If they could do it to this person, they could do it to any of US!!!

Thanks again to everyone who gave me advice. I have now joined the Inayan Eskrima school, and I really like the training! The instructors are great as well. Many thanks to Steve Harvey and Masirib Guro Steve for the recommendation!

No problem Marc!

I know you will enjoy your training in Inayan Eskrima. You are in competent hands with Katulong Guro's Fernandez and Lepeut. Also, do yourself a favor and take advantage of the fact that Masirib Guro Hart is staying in Paris for the time being. In my book, he is the best Suro Mike Inay ever produced - and that's saying allot!
