Hello to everyone! Just found this site. Great info.
I just purchased a Buck Custom Stag Kalinga #054 of 250
I have always wanted a Kalinga, but never bought one for some reason.
But this one with the stag handle called to me. It sure is a good looking knife.
Can someone tell me how many other variations of the Custom Kalinga were produced? I think I have found a new obsession ;)
Thanks.
Steve.

Steve,

First of all, welcome to the Forums! When the Buck Custom Shop was open from 1981 until 1993, the made nearly 700 Kalingas. They used many different handle materials, including mastodon and Mother of pearl. They even made them with Damascus blades. Those will be tough to find though, only 6 were made. Hope this helps you somewhat.

Thanks for the welcome, and the information. 700 kinds, wow.
Maybe I will start with a dozen or so ;)
What is your favorite Kalinga custom?
The Damascus blade sounds beautiful, but I am sure it is waaaaay out of my price range. (sigh)

:D :D :D

Asking BuckCustom what his favorite custom knife is, even limiting it to Kalinga's might be a tough question. Click the "My BCCI Pages" link in my signature to see a sample of John's knives and why he is known as BuckCustom. The first picture you will see are some John's knives on display.

And .41Dude, I echo John's WELCOME to BFC.. there is a ton of info here. If you want even more specific info on Buck knives, think about joining the Buck Collector's Club. Click on the other links in my signature for more info... or email me direct.

Aw shucks, Dan. You're being too kind!

Steve, my favorite Kalinga is most likely one with a mastodon handle. I'm very partial to mastodon, especially outside bark mastodon. The Mother of Pear is a beauty too though. I was fortunate enough to pick up a stag Damascus Kalinga that ranks right up near the top as well.

The Kalingas show up quite frequently on the auction sites. Keep your eyes open, and you can build a great collection.

And now it's my turn to echo Dan, you should consider joing the Buck Collectors Club!

Don't forget the Yellowhorse enhanced Kalingas. Starting in 1982, David started using the Kalinga and even did a custom hand-made sheath for it, it was called the Fancy Lacy design. On into 1985 he did another for Cutlery Shoppe, proposed for the Kachina series, The Eagle Dancer. More recently, in commeration with the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation in South Dakota, two Kalinga editions with mirror polished blade honoring Crazy Horse. All great Buck Yellowhorse knives.

Don't over look the little brother of the Kalinga, the Akonua...

Guys, I am on the way out of my door right now. I appreciate the very warm welcome and will be joining the club.
I picked up my Kalinga on E-bay. I was not even looking for a knife.
One link went to another, and another, then to my new baby.
Have you ever had a knife go "pssssst, over here, take me home"
I have also never owned a stag handled fixed blade.
It's all new to me and I am loving it.
Be back in a while.
Steve.
