I just got an " old" ( beat up) Kalinga.
How do I determine it's steel ?
It has wood handles ( rather nice ) and the tang area is a mirror, the blade is satin/ coarse finish.
All it says is
Buck
KALINGA
USA

I would venture a guess that unless is indicates something to the contrary, it is most likely 420HC, or whatever the standard steel was for the year the knife was made.

I don't know about the 4 or 5 other guys who read this Forum...but I'm waiting for someone who knows Kalingas to say something... :D

well bonus if it has to be sent anywhere that sounds like the guy to go to thanks for the reply and does he have an email for the custom shop ?

To the best of my knowledge, the early Kalingas were 440C and then became 425 modified when the conversion in steel occurred in many models. I am not sure exactly what year that occurred.

The later made knives had the date symbols Buck began using in 1986.

Hey Gringo...

Handle material and sheath configuration (if knife and sheath have not been mixed up ) is the only way I know.Black handle wood grain (aged) sheath were made in the 70's .Sheath had hollow rivits.Solid rivits in the sheath in the 80's and 90's. Sewn sheath since then .I have six but they are not at work with me ...... might have to change that.Kalinga stamped upside down on one of mine .Metal type ? Thunder storms gettin' outta here !!!!!!!

This forum sure is fast.
It takes me a while to get back.
Leroy should be home tomorrow and I'll priority the knife to him and let you know what he comes up with.
The handlles look like a cheap cocobola or rosewood... Decent but... I only tolerate awsomeness ;)
Like Joe said.. They made over SIXTY THOUSAND so I'll modify this one to my liking..
Take that back ! Leroy will. I modify guns, not knives :o YET ! ;)
