For quite some time, I've had my eye on the Buck 419 Kalinga folder with rosewood and an S30V blade. I handled one at Bass Pro Shops, and found an excellent price online. Now comes the wait for the package....

Why don't I see these being mentioned? It's an impressive knife in hand; not "tacti-cool" at all. Are they unpopular?

I have a 415BR and I think it is a great knife. Looks good and feels good in the hand. Someday I will get one of the rosewood ones.

Not unpopular at all. We just talked them to death when they first came out.

You will enjoy it.

Thanks Pack Rat.

The pictures are interesting, and that thread mentions the Gen 5 several times. I think that may be next on my list; the 119 is too big for EDC.

I don't have the Gen 5. Maybe some of the guys will kick in and talk about theirs.

Joe-Bob,

Not dead or unpopular to me. That exact model is on my top wish list. At around $100 it is just out of my price range. I was just scheming on how a Chrismas colaboration between relatives may put one into my pocket.

I admit they're a little pricey, but they have the fancier bolster arrangement and a premium blade steel.

Got one from New Graham back in the spring and I have been EDC ing it since. This is a great knife especially for those folks used to using recurves. It has cutting efficiency and just zips through things like cardboard carpetting fabrics, meat etc.

I used the knife for food preparation, and it sliced and diced vegetables, peeled fruit and cucumbers without any effort.

I also butchered a rabbit with it and it worked flawlessly as a knife. As with any folder the only drawback was blood and stuff getting between the inside of the folder. However, hot water and soap got the knife cleaned up and ready for more action.

The steel holds a good edge, and the leather pouch sheath is attractive on the belt.

I really like this knife, people ask me where I got it as it stands out from many other folders.

This knife is recommended for anyone who likes a large folder, recurves, or who has large hands.

I took a proto on a hunting trip and really liked how it felt when I choked up with a forefinger in front of the guard...really centralized the balance and shortened the blade when working in tight/blind spaces when field dressing....

I still love my 419 - a great buy - lots of S30V steel - and in a usefully large knife. I EDC mine sheathed - in a front pocket. Here it is with it's fb brother - and a 110 - for comparison:

Mine is a keeper - hope you enjoy yours!

PS Look back for my comments re the Gen5 models - 005GYS & 005RWS - both great. I love the nylon horizontal sheath of the GYS - and 420HC is fine. The 005RWS has checkering on the laminated rosewood - a detriment to me. The cheaper 005GYS has seen lots more use here.

Well, it seems my knife wasn't in stock. I just got the ship confirmation this evening. I sorta suspected that would be the case, since the knife was well under the price of most dealers.

Still looking forward to it, I'll try to post pics when it gets in.

The knife came today!

It really is impressive. The finish is really nice on it, and the sheath looks great.

The only thing that concerns me is that the liner lock is already more than halfway across the surprisingly narrow tang area.

That's where mine is. I don't worry about it. There is always Buck's warranty. :D

Thanks Pack Rat.

I'm glad I splurged and got the more expensive model. This thing looks amazing. The only other one I've handled was at Bass Pro Shops. Theirs was tarnished and dull, but still it was impressive.
