Hey guys, I found out I'm gettin a Buck Kalinga Pro fixed blade for fathers day from my wife and kids, (I needed a new hunting knife! :D ) What are yall's thoughts on the Kalinga pro? I'm not getting the S30v version :grumpy: but the 420HC, which I guess is fine since the 420 IS easier to field sharpen.:)

If, you use a diamond stone--theres not much difference in sharpening, but a big difference in using. ie edge retention. I prefer the rose wood handle too.Your choice. DM

Hey JSC...
Cool Father's Day gift :)

Get the Kalinga. Regardless of the steel, I am pretty certain you won't regret it.

I used a 1986 (not certain what steel was used then) and one of the new Pro S30V models and ya can't beat their overall form, fit, and function.

Buck did good in bringing back the Kalinga.

I have a fixed, and folder on my to get list in the s30v blades. I all most had both as christmas gifts from my loveing wife, we just could noy find any in stock. So she let me go to the bay and have some fun there, came back with two Empress trio sets in the display boxes. HL

To be honest I have never heard of a single case of "buyer's remorse" from an S30V blade purchase...with that said...the 420HC will give you better rust prevention and will be easier to sharpen.

We moved into a new house this hunting season so I have not tried the new kalingas in the field but I was intrigued with the design and how you can choke up on these knives with a finger in front of the guard...when you are buried up to your elbows in a chest cavity and blind to the knife edge that improved control is important...and I think when skinning will be less fatiguing

Gonna be a good Father's Day...

I drooled over the S30V #408 since I first saw it gracing their catalog's front page - over a year ago. I hounded local folk - mail order folk - folks here - finally got mine last fall - then the #419 folder version. I missed out on some other serious goodies last fall, but it was worth it. I actually carried the folder to a Christmas party the day it arrived - trimmed my baked ham slices, much to the hostess' chagrin, with it. I bought them for looks first... love that brass & rosewood. For hunting, I am afraid I would opt for the 420HC version - the easier to re-edge version, as Mr. Buck suggested. Of course, nowadays, that #408 isn't that much more...

Here are my pair - and a $22 closeout priced Wally World '07 'collector's tin' 110:

Like my other rosewood & brass Bucks, they are almost too pretty to use... almost! You'll love the #406 (or #406CM).

CJ,I didn't know that 420J2/420HC was higher than 14% chromium?Even with the powdered metalurgy process which I've noticed enhances its stainless properties and other qualities as well. Perhaps because of this one may realize 14.5 % true effects. The other is above this? DM

I've been so impressed with my 420HC Kalinga folder, that I think it's time for the 420HC fixed blade!

My S30V rosewood Kalinga folder has become a safe queen...it is just too pretty to use, as noted in a post up above.

(Glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. :))

Hey Stainz...
GREAT pic...thanks!
I agree...I EDC'd an older (1986) Kalinga and loved it (still do). But when I saw that catalog cover...it was lust at first sight.

Think I drove Buck and Mr. Oden nuts with e-mails.
Finally got the set (fixed and folder) and I can state confidently that they are worth more than they cost in quality and materials.
Then add the looks.
