Boker Kalishnikov blade interchangeability?

Hi all,

First post here and hoping to draw on the experience of the group to sort something out-

Can anyone confirm that the blades might be interchangeable on the Kalishnikov knives? I have just purchased a sub kalishnikov which I love but for every day use the handle is too small for my hands. I prefer the short blade both for safety in use and I think people are less nervous about it so was thinking about getting a larger size and swapping the subk blade into it if possible.

Also interested in other knife suggestions that might fit this bill. I am in CT so 1.5" blade is max for autos. The length is fine with me but I cant find anything that small that is commercially made.

Thank you :)

Ben

A design featuring a large handle and small blade would be considered an exception to broad preference so few production models feature such a design.

You might consider picking out a knife with a handle and steel, you really like, and re-profiling the blade to suit any requirements or restrictions you might have. With the variety of flipper tabs, holes, and thumbs studs, one could argue that an automatic or assisted knife is an unnecessary novelty, and even a compromise if closing your knife conveniently is preferred. If you are concerned with other's perception regarding the "aggressiveness" of your pocket knife, it would be logical to avoid an automatic or assisted knife. Small, rounded, slow and quiet seem to me to be the most "public-friendly" attributes one might seek in a pocket knife; Rounded, as in a spey or sheep's foot shaped tip.

Agreed on all fronts- hoping to swap one for a quicker more finished look. Not so much concerned with the convenience of closing or others reactions as much as I would like to see if I could make this work and try it for a couple weeks in use.

No problem grinding a new profile on a blade etc. but worry about the temper- is there a go-to article here on re-tempering a compromised blade?

Thx

I have a Kalashnikov 74 auto S30V and I ruined the blade learning how to sharpen knives. I called Boker and they could not supply an S30V blade but they gave me a regular blade (can't remember what it is) and charged me $15. By the way the woman in the warranty dept. has the memory of a sieve so make sure you call once a week to remind her.

The only auto i can think off is the kershaw launch 4 with a 1.9 inch blade.
As for the handle length of the small kalashnikov, Maybe try adding a fob to give something else to grip on too.

Sounds like the blades might be interchangeable then? I suspect its the case (that they use the same machining on the pivot end of all the kalishnikov blades and just vary the lengths)- any insight?

I believe that is the case. You can't use a different length than the original. Your best bet is to call their warranty dept. and speak to the woman. By the way Boker has a very strange policy regarding repairs of auto knives,
If you make the mistake of sending the knife to them for repairs they will not return it to you, supposedly they will discard it. they will send you the parts and you will need to fix it yourself. I am not sure what the policy is if you return it to the approved vendor for repair.

I actually emailed with her last week so hopefully they will get back to me on this.

Boker says it cannot be done but I have to believe that the handle end of the kalashnikov blades are all the same (mass production logic)- going to take a chance and order another and see if I am right unless anyone else owns both and can tell me?

It works! Short of a blade thickness difference (larger blade was thinner go figure) I am in business. Think I will regrind the larger blade to have < 1.5" overall length and put it back in but this exercise worked and I have a very usable small blade auto with a large handle :)
