Uncle Bill , Do you have a listing of the Kami'sand the way they mark the blades ? Could you post this if you have it , or get it if you don't ?
It would be great to know the name of the craftsman/artist who make the blades. Kinda compleating the circle and all .

Edd, this is all I know, but hopefully it will tide you over until Uncle Bill has a chance to respond:

Sher Bahadur: sun
Kumar (Sher's younger brother): 6-pointed star (looks like Star of David)
Sanu: cross (looks like Christian cross)

That's all I know.

Didn't see Blues' post when I typed the above. Disregard. Good post, Blues.

I sent email to Gelbu telling him that I would have to sell all unmarked blades at village khukuri prices. He relayed this message onto the kamis, telling them that he would have to adjust the wages he paid them accordingly. They went insane! I don't think we will be seeing many unmarked blades in the future.

Somewhere I have a sketch that Gelbu made of the various kami markings. I'll scan and post it if somebody will remind me tomorrow or the next day. You have to bug me or I forget things.

How about those scanned kami marks ?

Has sher ever made "balanced" khuk ? I bought one from gottlieb , and it has a sun on it , I know most of his have no marks. I think this one is old HI stock that they bought as he says they don't stock these , he just found a couple in his warehouse .
The gurkha house mark is therer , it's just very faint, like it is done with engraving pencil.

Maybe later today. I'm running and also have rehab. Have to take care of orders first and foremost.

Sher doesn't do balance khukuris -- too dainty for him. Shers' mark is round full sun with rays emitting all directions.

I'm sure it is one of yours. I got out the
pollishing wheel and when I was through I could make out where the HI logo was ground out. I could still faintly see it . The mark looks love a five pointed star , bot the middle is circular nat a pentagram .

Not ours, Edd. Our kami marks go on left side of blade just above the bolster. The only star we use is six pointed (Kumar) and looks very much like the star of David.

HI rejects used to be sold to dealers. The logo was ground off, scrolled buttcap removed, and off it went to Kathmandu.

Khukuri FAQ

Edd: Sorry not to see this post earlier (someone just pointed it out to me). I can't say for sure if it was an HI knife or not. You are correct that we did buy up the remaining stock from TB. Some of them came with the HI logo groudn off. Some came with the HI logo still on - you really can't tell the difference if you can't see the faint dots where the periods would go.

I will say that we got those balances in BEFORE we left for Nepal in May. That was before we did the HI purchase. What used to happen is that when TB couldn't meet demand for our orders, he'd dip into HI khukuris he had left over and would grind off the logo. Your balance could be one of those. It's just hard to tell.

As for the "ground off and sold to dealers" that's just not correct. Lalit is TB's partner and not just "any dealer." We started buying the HI knives when Bill stopped buying from TB (or "shop 1" as Bill used to call it). I remember a story about this phenomenon coming from a mutual customer. It really was quite amusing. If you're interested, I'll relay on my forum, as it's not appropriate to do so here.

Things a little slow over on the GH forum?

TB told Yangdu (in Nepali!) personally that was exactly what he did with HI khukuris that Pala rejected (I pull off the scrolled buttcap and grind off the HI and sell it to a dealer).

Since I was not there to see what happened with my own eyes I can't say for sure what happened to HI rejects but I know we didn't want them and would not sell them.

And as far as Bill stopping buying from TB all deals and decisions were made in Nepal by HI owner, Kami Sherpa, not by me in Reno.

:
Edd I have two balance models with the little round centered, six pointed star on them. The 1st one was a little village model sold by HI and the next two were made and marked HI. I gave one to my g'daughter. Both of the ones marked HI were too damned soft and when I told Uncle Bill about it he made it right with me. You might have one of the HI rejects like mine were. Had Uncle Bill known about it sooner they wouldn't have gotten out either and they would have been sold to a dealer. I can expect a villager to be a tad soft sometimes, but HI's khukuri's all come in at least 57 Rc and usually higher around 59-61 Rc. I buy only HI Khukuri's and the village models they sell for that reason among others.

I have seen others with the same mark. It's a pretty common mark on some models all over Nepal.
