I have just finished my first Khukuri re-handle.
This was not my first handle job but it was the first Khukuri I have done.

I now have more respect for the Kami and the work they do.

It is a Texan-ized version of a traditional handle.
The re-handle was in response to a member having problems with his handle.
It is longer and thicker to fit my hand.

As of yet I haven't stepped up to the HI quality but I will make it some day.

Any thoughts?

As this is a discussion about rehandling another manufacturers product, off to the cantina we go.....

Nice job, Cicatriz. Although i would dress the front guard for aesthetics sake and instead of using ready rod i would've just welded on a piece of mild steel, made a buttcap and keeper and peened as normal.
But that's just me, i like to keep to as close to traditional methods as possible.

EDIT:
Welcome Cicatriz! Sorry my manners are so lacking this morning

Karda - Thanks for moving the thread!(my mistake) This is the same non HI I asked questions about before.

I up-cycle as much as possible. The brass came from a couple different windmill cylinder pump valve assemblies. I liked the pitted, used look and wanted to be reminded where it came from.(besides, I'm too lazy)

No problem! You didnt know. We try to keep the main forum as H.I. specific as possible.
There are many ways to rehandle a khukuri, using both modern methods and materials and there are specific ways to keep to tradition. Neither is wrong, but a matter of experience and preference.

Well that was short lived...
Abuse test. Chopped through a 2x6 and started on a big dried oak log.
Massive failure.
The tang bent in front of the weld and bye bye to the cherry...

One of these days HI will get some of my monies.....

Sorry to hear that, Cicatriz.
Sounds to me like the welding possibly drew back the temper to dead soft, either that or it was that way to begin with.
We've had a few tang failures over the 25 years H.I. has been in business. A few were professionally repaired by a very kind and generous forumite named Art Swyhart, but most were replaced under warranty. We do our best here, but noone can be perfect always.

The tang was dead soft to begin with. I broke part of it off threading it. Then straightened it with pliers.
I should have gone with my gut feeling and stopped right there.

I'm looking for an active volcano right now.
Anybody know of any in Texas?

Sorry for the khuk failure. You did a really cool job on the handle though. What part of the republic do you call home?
