Kamis' apprentices?

Does anyone know if the kamis will take non-Nepalese apprentices? I'm not talking in the near future, but from the pictures I've seen and from some of the glowing reviews I've read khukuris seem to me one of the most beautiful and functional blades available. Now that I have one in the mail, hopefully I'll be able to judge for myself

. Anyway, I'm now somewhat fascinated with kukris and would like to know if there is any way to learn the art of their construction from the kamis themselves. I'm sure some members here (Uncle Bill?) who know much better than I how the kamis would feel about this sort of thing. I'm not talking about doing this tomorrow; I think that maybe I should finish high school first

. But I really am very genuinely interested in knifemaking and I'm considering it as a career choice. Who better to learn from than the makers of the "unbreakable knife", the Ang Khola? Anyway, please let me know what you think about this idea, and just let me know if I've overstepped myself; it surely wouldn't be the first time. TIA everyone.

Roadrunner,

Fascinating idea. You can start practicing eating rice and lentils now.

If you don’t mind living poor, you will have an experience you will never forget.

Ahhhh Youth,
Just the stuff dreams are made of.... Are you willing to give up every thing and every body you know for the next decade or so? Are you willing to give long hours of hard, dirty, backbreaking work for almost nothing? Learn another language and eat poorly? If so you might be ready to do it.

Sounds fun

. Seriously though, would they even teach me if I was interested? I know that it is a very important thing for them, so I'm not sure how they would feel about sharing their experience with a foriegner. I suppose that's what I really want to know, whether or not there is even a possibility of learning the art from the masters.

I think Dan K said it about as well as it can be said. Yes, I think you could get on as an apprentice but the price is very high...not in terms of cash outlay but the things that Dan mentioned.
