Kami's heat treatment

I read on the HI web site and saw the Kami's heat treating blades by pouring water over the cutting edge of the blade, watching the blade turn different colors as it cooled, looking for the right temperature to stop. I was just wondering if they ever water quench the cutting edge into a water medium. Also, do they ever try different quenching mediums, like oil? I am not questioning the quality of the treatment, just wondering if any Kami's work with any other mediums or methods?

There is information about the forging on the HI web page. The water tempering quenching is what makes the art so unique. I don't believe the kamis use other methods but that does not mean they are not familiar with at least some of them. They are trained from an early age how to use the water, and to differentially harden the khuk blade.

from what I've been told...Bill had Bura try oil quench and he hated it.

The water method does work well...and is further proof that the kamis are using something similar to 5160 (medium carbon, alloyed steel).
