Why is it that the kamies are Hindu,yet most of the Ghorkhas are Buddhist?What are the Newari?

Most Gorkhas are Hindu. Early on Buddists were not accepted into Gorkha service because the Brits felt they were too peaceful.

Newaris come in both Hindu and Buddhist variety. They were never accepted and still are not accepted into Gorkha service. They are the business caste.

I still wouldn't want to tangle with that 30%, I don't care how peaceful they may be. Now, OTOH, are there any who fight with both hands and both legs tied up?

Is there any Moslem community in the Valley of Kathmandu or anywhere in Nepal?
 
Modh, there are enough Moslems in Nepal certainly to be noticed -- most come up from India. I observed quite a number of Sikhs driving taxis in Kathmandu.

The various religious groups in Nepal seem to get along quite well, unlike down in India where the Moslem and Hindu communities are often at odds with one another.

Now you have me confuseled, Uncle.

You answered a question about muslims in Nepal by saying there were numerous Sikh, taxi drivers and Arvind has talked in another thread of the Muslim/Sikh violence at Partition. Then you say people seem to get along better with others of a different religion in Nepal.

Would you please explain?

Now personally it seems like I have a hard enough time trying to remember two simple facts:
1) There is a God (something out there/God/ Gods/karma).
2) I ain't him/it.
without going around and telling everybody else how to run their life.

I guess it's common thing everywhere. Differences may cause violence - when everything is OK then everybody always can get along with each other ie.
  • People of different religion.
  • People of different race.
  • People of different ideology.
  • People of different colour.
  • People of different country.
  • People of different area.
  • People of different langguage.
  • People of different school of thought.
  • People of different sect.
  • People of different family.
  • People of different ... etc ... etc.
Allah (you called Him as God) is always there - He is the planner and He is the judge! It is His master plan so that all of us are not belong to same race, same colour, same langguage, same religion, same everythings! There is and there will be His fair judgement to everybody - good result for those who perform good (and vise versa)! Otherwise what's the point of doing all good things?


 
New immigrants,who are not there for a criminal purpose,tend to act like guests.It`s the second generation that causes trouble.
 
Rusty, I am not sure why people of different religions seem to be more tolerant and get along better in Nepal than other places but that is the way it is. Nepal does have a law which prohibits "preaching and attempted conversion" which I think helps.

Nepal is mostly Hindu, then Buddhist, then a few Moslems, and even a few Christians. All seem to get along okay. It was rather interesting. I celebrated Dasein and Tihar with Hindus, Losar and other Buddist celebrations with Buddhists, and both faiths celebrated Christmas with me. It worked.

Some people use politics and religion as a means to aquire power over others to feed their ego. They worship themselves, not whatever deity they profess. Hypocrites.

Others choose to hate and blame others. Rather than admitting they need to change and grow, they choose to hate and blame others, and say, "Well, I'm better than them!".

And yet others seem to try to force the deity to do their will rather than the reverse. They parrot their holy writings over and over as if they were a spell that would do what they wanted if they said it often enough. Witchcraft.

I need to take care of my own problems and my deity seems to put people in my life I can learn from. Truth is truth, whether I learn it from a very holy person or the most lowdown, mean, disgusting person I have the misfortune to know. It's just harder to swallow when it comes from an obnoxious %#}{/";=+!

But then I only am familiar with people who claim to be christian. If there are Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Sikh, Hindu, or any other religions that don't have these people problems, I'd sure like to know of them.

And yes, Mohd, it's hard to do the right thing when you are in pain and distress and fear.

Sorry for the ranting and raving.

( Just saw your post Uncle. Yeah, if I didn't care about people what people use religions as an excuse to do to others wouldn't upset me so much ).

This is a unique place, where so many wise but humble people come because of the company. I value it. I've an opportunity to see life thru so many different eyes, and I've learned so much. Like Bill says, "... what has this got to do with khukuris? Everything." And all this education, from people of many countries, cultures, and religions, is mine for nothing besides being as honest with myself as I'm able. Sorry for this last session of ranting and frothing at the mouth.

Oh, and my new signature comes from the Jack Benny line where he was held up at the point of a gun and the robber told him: "Your money or your life. After a pause, the robber demands "Well, which is it going to be?" and Jack answers......

When is the last time that you saw a humble pilot,SCUBA diver,Paratrooper,or Ranger?SF guys fake it.Buddhists have to work on humble.If they have accomplished something,this is not easy.
