Meet Kamisaurus;

Snuggled into my pack, it carries well and is nicely compact. Less aggressive looking than a huge knife when I meet peeps on the trail

This edged tool was conceived and built by Rick Marchand, of Wildertools;

I think this is Klingon for 'Super excellent trail blazing knife';

I'm a big proponent of hemp in its myriad of uses. For wrapping handles it provides mildew resistance and a sure grip.

A turk's head provides a purchase when carrying the Kamisaurus securely. When carrying, I like to hold the handle as close to the blade as possible so I don't have the razor edge swinging around at knee height.

A full height flat grind terminates in an appleseed secondary bevel. I love the angularity of the blade, the edge has a very slight inward curvature that cleaves through the forest like a mofo.

Love the dimpled copper collar/guard. Nice touch!

I got a lot of work done with Kamisaurus yesterday. Filmed some of it and will post up the video a little later.

Here is a picture of the edge before I got started, (this tool has the most nicely finished edge of any knife I have- polished and smooth just the way I like it);

Here is a picture of the edge after hacking and chopping for an hour and a half;

Not much change in the edge, although it wouldn't shave like it did when it was new. Might have something to do with all the schmutz on it after chopping through a bunch of stuff, but I'll find out once I clean it.

Also gotta give a shout out to Michael Rader. I got this little knife from him some time ago, and although it took me some time to warm up to it, I carry it with me every time I get out into the forest. It's great and I love it! Thanks Michael!

I'll post up some of the footage I captured a little later on.

Both blades are very cool, but the Kami is just awesome. Love the photos where you can see the very "purpose-driven" edge geometry!

Couple of pretty cool pickups, Lorien.
What's the steel on the big boy ?

Doug

I like that kamisaurus too! Looks like an AWESOME bush clearing tool.

The Rader looks like a heavy duty performer as well.

Doug, the steel is 1084- one of my favourites.

I love me my Louis Vuitton Joe :)

Lorien, you are really lucky man.
Dreaming to have one of Wildertools' blade, but my developing country salary is not allow it.

Rick Marchand is the bee's knees.

Awesome piece from him, bro. Rick's work always exhibits careful thought to it's use and application. You can tell he's put a great deal of thought into every aspect of the design and execution. I'm betting it just sails through that wood!

Woah.. great pics, Lorien! Although, it really shows all those flaws I try to ignore with every knife I make.:p

I hope it comes back to shaving sharp for you after de-schmutzifying... It should. I have not tested edge holding on that prehistoric cherry wood you have there... looks like tough stuff. Yeah... I'll blame the wood. Ha!:thumbup:

Thanks a lot for the thread, bud and to all the folks with the nice comments... If there are any negative comments, let's all band together and hate em'... you wanna hate em'? Lets hate em'.:)

I was wondering what you use to sharpen an appleseed secondary bevel ?

Rick, no steel or knife that I know of would be able to retain a shaving edge after what I was doing out there. All the moss and wort growing over everything still needs soil to grow in, so it's not just wood these knives have to deal with. Not to mention all the energy released against the edge when cutting that tough, springy ocean spray. I always get a chuckle watching people chop through a pine 2x4 and then check the edge to see if it will still shave hair, thinking that's a great test. It's a test, but not a great one. Not like what I do, at any rate- but maybe I have to put on a goalie mask for people to buy it ;)

All that being said, the edge has been dulled a little bit, ie; it won't shave. But it will cleanly cut newsprint. The proof is in how easily it can be brought back to shaving sharp, and that is one of the reasons I love 1084 so much. I'm happy to see that a little attention with a fine ceramic has renewed the edge to its original sharpness. No big deal, edges need maintenance and that is a fact.

Phil, there were a great many times I wished I had my Shindaiwa 357! But I do appreciate the quiet, and if I didn't use my knives for this kind of work, they wouldn't see ANY work! As for hand saws, they have their place, but where's the drama? Hand saws are BORING- there, I said it :)

fine ceramic is what I usually use Doug. I'm going to put together a strop, but usually I find that the edge generally just needs to be aligned without removing much material and sometimes nothing more is needed than a burnishing steel, like a khukuri comes with, (chakmak). A convex grind makes for a pretty tough 'edge', and removing material by oversharpening serves only to decrease performance significantly.

Doug, I sharpen the final edge on an 8000gt waterstone, then a final strop on wet newsprint. I raise it slightly to give that bit of convex. On a chopper like this, I raise it a bit more but quite literally, the user can sharpen any way they seem fit as the geometry is so slight.

Lorien... Have you tried to sling it around on the baldric set up that came with it? That is something new I'm trying.

Thanks for the quick replies, Lorien and Rick.
Rick,

Really like your work ! :thumbup:

Doug :)

Great stuff Lorien and Rick! Lorien, you have one of the most enviable collections of knives!

Rick, I did try, but I'm quite gnomish in size and it's a little big for me.

JCoutts, that's very kind thank you for the nice words
