Kampilans?

As a hobby, I fool around repairing Filipino/Indonesian weapons and making aluminum trainers. For about the last 9 months all the FMA schools I have visited or contacted want either real or aluminum Kampilans. Anyone know what the sudden interest is? Other than the fact that it is normally considered the longest of the Filipino edged weapons, it doesn't have anything special going for it. Just wondering.

What I find really cool about the Kampilan is the scabbard design. Because of the odd shape of the scabbard wide at the tip skinny at the hilt, a regular straight scabbard would not work. If the scarrab were to accomidate the tip the part near the tip would give a lot of play (move around)

The Kamplian scabbard is actually two pieces of wood that run vertically, shaped like the blade placed on both sides. It is then bound together with hemp. This protects the edge/blade of the elements.

When you need to deploy the sword there is no need to pull it out of the scabbard. Just strike a target and the edge cuts the rope, the pieces of word come apart and blade is exposed.

I have seen a few being auctioned on E-bay (www.ebay.com)in the last couple months, but they are few and far between. There are more barongs, karambits and kris for sale. I would be interested in hearing if anyone has attempted to use or train in the past.

Sometimes the scabbard of a kampilan will be made in one piece and have a handle, so that the scabbard can be used as a long narrow shield in the off-hand after the blade is drawn.

I have only handled two live Kampilans. One was in extremely good shape, but the grip was small enough that I had trouble holding it to get a feel for it's swing or if there anything special in it's use. The Kampilan hilt does not allow for a lot grip variation, because of it's design. The second one had obviously seen a lot of hard use and the blade/hilt connection was loose, like Smoke mentioned, so although the grip was larger, I was again unable to put it thru a real workout.
