Karambit what am I missing

the karambit and more important the reverse grip seems to me to shorten the reach of a person who is in need of all the reach he/she could get if in a knife fight.
my question, is the karambit all hype or not, what am I missing, why are they so popular?

like any fighting system there are advantages and disadvantages.

the ring provides retention and speed. the short blade provides handling and the ability to 'hide' the knife in a fight.

i have seen very long karambits, so reach can be overcome.

and most styles i have seen put the knife in reverse grip, with the obvious exception of sword fighting.

I think most would agree that knife fights in general are close quarter confrontations so unless the other guy has a sword reach is somewhat irrelevant.
