Hey guys recently I have have bought myself a Karambit training knife to see if I would like to get an actual blade and really like the balance and feel of the Karambit knife as a tactical/defensive blade so I figured I would enlist the assistance of the "experts":D. so what do you guys recommend for my fist and most likely only Karambit?I have a a budget so I would prefer to keep it under $100 but I'm flexible, also I do have martial arts experience and would be taking a few courses on the use of such a knife.

Thanks, TheDandyLion

I have bought several karambits from several makers. I can only say that emerson is only really perfect for me. I didnt like fox or 5.11. If its a folding karambit just get Emerson. I know its not what you want to spend but it may be the best thing too do. I like how the ring is like 2 rings since the liner and g-10 are in 2 pieces. It doesn't wobble on finger and you get more stable spins. I like the newer models with the larger hole.

Why do you want to carry a Karambit? Its is such a purpose built tool that for EDC situations it almost makes itself useless. More than likely, you will be carrying it around and never use it. Its shape makes it useless for 99% of all utility tasks.

Why not just carry a normal blade that you can actually use and then also use that for self defense purposes? It will hurt baddies just as good as anything else including a karambit and I doubt you are going to be de-animating jihadis during the work week...

I beg to differ, the hawkbill makes a fearsome shape as a utility knife/tearing through boxes. A tad unorthodox in the public eye I suppose and 'cumbersome' to sharpen (just use a rod and angles). I recommend the 5.11 master or c.u.b karambit, some pop up on the exchange from time to time for good prices.

Like I said I have had experience with a practice Karambit and used to actually EDC a carpeting knife like this;

And loved it

I could find "exactly" what I wanted either, so I'm modifying a Topps Cali Cobra into a karambit by fitting, welding & blending a 1" carbon steel ring onto the butt. It's off for a flesh-toned Cerekote finish right now. It should be well-below my $100 budget (discounting my own labor) & be an effective defensive tool (not a fighting knife) upon completion. As for the dismissers of karambits, they're welcome to their opinions. I've personally witnessed (Malaysian) karambit techniques of TOTAL physical control over an adversary. Y'all are absolutely right, the karambit isn't ideal for the untrained novice. Neither IMHO is a 1911. Yet in the right hands... whew!
