Karambits in NYC?

I am not sure if there is any non weapon reason for a karambit that would stand up in court. When I first saw them I figured it was a gutting knife used for hunting. I think you would be hard pressed to say it is not a dangerous knife in court. I copied what I wrote earlier today here....Dangerous Knife" is one of those great terms that allows for an officer to operate in that "grey" area of law. Any knife designed primilarly as a weapon ( Bayonet, tanto, spear, double edge blade), any knife that was used as a weapon ( you are charged in addition to an other charges), any knife that you say you are carring for self defense

It might have been a different situation if he hadn't been hospitalized. The district attorney might have a problem getting a grand jury to indict a man nearly kiilled defending himself, no matter what pocket knife he had. Also, he belongs to a politically-connected union, which I noticed got mentioned as showing up for him at the hospital.

We don't know what a kerambit scenario would have been. It depends on how well he could use it. Since it does not look like an ordinary sort of knife, it would definitely raise a few more eyebrows.

The knife is the last thing you should have to think about. Keep it simple, keep it useful: a utility knife you use every day will be where your hand knows to get it and open it without fumbling.

Attitude, alertness, and training are MUCH more important. A knife, stick, pen, handful of sand ... or a pistol ... are no use if you're blindsided or DEAD before you realize you need to use them.

Self-defense means keeping yourself from getting hurt.
Fighting, unfortunately, is a classic way to get hurt.

The basic rules are:
* Don't go there.
* If you find yourself there, leave.
* If you can't leave, then fight your way out.

* None of this includes fighting for its own sake because you were insulted, or challenged, or feuding with someone.

A member of another forum was arrested and prosecuted for carrying a karambit folder in NYC. He might be a member here; perhaps he will chime in if he sees this. The folder was one sold by Karambit.com; I think 5.11 sells those now.

Quick opinion is NO. There is wording that a stiletto knife shows intent to use as a weapon. Check Levine link and you will see it. I have seen that knife and several like it and they all can be flicked open easily ( at least by me), so therefore are gravity knives. Finally they are 4" blades and the law says UNDER 4"....From the same company you can get this to legally carried ( I do)...http://www.worldknives.com/products/maserin-bull-horn-shot-gun-shell-puller-knife-ms1551crb-777.html and if you are stuck on the one you like then SMKW has them for $7.95 http://eknifeworks.com/webapp/eComm...chText=stiletto&Mode=Text&range=11&SKU=210661 and you may need the extra money for a lawyer...lol

here is the wording...4... The possession by any person of any dagger, dirk,
stiletto, dangerous knife or any other weapon, instrument,
appliance or substance designed, made or adapted for use
primarily as a weapon, is presumptive evidence of intent
to use the same unlawfully against another

these are folding lock backs and not REAL stilettos, but the sellers have been calling them stilettos for years now....
