I have recently etched my AK - thanks again Ferguson for providing lots of helpful info - and it turned out quite cool. Once I can get my hands on my dads digicam, I'll figure out a way to post some pictures. It may take a while though...

Anyways, since the AK went so well, I decided to etch karda and chakma as well. After all, I had a whole bucket of FeCl3 left to use.

Interestingly though, the karda is showing several bright lines, lenghtwise. I suspect these are cracks, but I don't know for sure.

The AK shows a beautiful dark sweetspot, and it is indeed very hard. Sharpening shows this :D

Still I have been wondering about the lines. The color in general is less bright than the AK's sweet spot, and the bright lines have the same color as the unhardened parts of the khuk.

Any suggestions ?

thanks, Keno

Interesting, but I wouldn't worry about it. The karda and chakma are low stressed parts. Just sharpen the karda and use as necessary. If it ever wears out (probably not in our lifetime :) ) find an old file, grind it to a karda shape and temper it in the oven at 350 degrees until it turns a light straw color. Slap a little handle on it and voila, new karda!

I'd love so see pics of your etched karda when you get them. Hmmm etch a karda, gives me some ideas!

Steve's got all the answers and although I'm not qualified to make this judgment it looks like they are right 99% of the time.
