Has anyone seen, handled or even purchased one of the new Karen Hood Chopper Survival knives being produced by CRKT yet. I really like the style and length. A bit spendy though. What are your thoughts? Good, bad or indifferent...

Had to go look at it.
I think it looks a LOT like some of the Beckers, Ontario, Buck, and even Schrade knives of that type.
For the cost of Karen's knife ... I'm sorry, but I think I'd rather get the Schrade with the same steel, and save roughly $300.

I don't see this knife as being traditional in any way, so this may not be the best place for this.
That being said, for chopping tasks I'm willing to guarantee that my Vaughan sub zero hatchet would outperform it in every way.

I have looked at it in the store. It looks like a decent design, but I can't figure out why it is so expensive. There are plenty of good blades that are comparable and cost a lot less.

You're talking MSRP. It can be had for just over $200, which is more than some similar Made-in-USA knives by other makers, about in line with others. I imagine what's holding this one back, aside from the price, is the manufacturer and I supsect that CRKT was banking on pedigree to sell it. They need to learn about baby steps.

I like Karen she's cool but there are way better options for knives than this at that price point..

I personally think that, while they are nice designs, crkt knifes are outrageously overpriced.

WAAAYYY out of line pricewise for what it is, even at the selling price. Materials and design are too similar to many other, much less expensive, knives. :thumbdn:

Another big fail for crkt. The knife might be great but most knife enthusiasts will never know because of the price. $230 for a 1095 blade with a crappy nylon sheath from a company with a dubious reputation? They have got to be kidding. Why would you spend that much and get less than if you spent $160 on a junglas and get more from a far more reputable company? It is amazing how crkt keeps shooting themselves in the foot. They constantly price themselves out of whatever market segment they try to enter.

I wonder who makes this knife for them

Not bad looking, but $375 (or even 200) is just so out of line for a 1095 chopper.

Check out becker, esee, schrade, or ontario and get a great USA made chunk of 1095 that is just as nice for half the price (or less).

What the heck is CRKT thinking. I have a few of they're mini folts patterns, but dang. Exorbitant pricing.

I just went and had a look. I agree that with a street price of about $225, 1095 steel at RC 56-58, micarta and a nylon sheath is way over priced for what you get.
For the money I'd buy an ESEE or a Becker.
