I inherited a couple of Japanese swords years ago. I think they are real and I've only been able to do a limited amount of research just to even grasp some of the terminology. Would appreciate any feedback, so here go the details:
  • One katana and one wakazashi. I don't think they are a matched set (daisho?)
  • Neither sword came with furniture or accessories. The katana only came in a scabbard with no handle. The wakazashi came in what looks like makeshift wood scabbard with handle
  • Both swords have their collars (habaki?)
  • The katana has engravings on both sides of the blade (horimono?). It also has four peg holes in the tang, two of which are filled in.
  • The wakazashi is very plain but it is signed (or I think it's a signature or date?)
Here is the wakazashi:

Your Wakazashi is signed, Soshu Ju Ise no Daijo Minamoto Tsunahiro. It is signed in the fashion of the 5th generation, but going on the photo alone, I wouldn't venture a guess to the validity of the mei other than there are parts of it which look dubious. It would need hands on study. Can't tell you much of anything on the Katana (not much to go on).
