I was looking for some recommendations on a practice Katana for Iaido and a Katana for cutting. There is so much stuff out there that it is difficult to figure out what is actualy worthy or my hard earned money and what isn't. I am on a budget and researching for down the road and would prefer not to spend more than 1K on a cutter.

Thank you.

Well Stefan....

There are very, very few swords suited to both kata AND tameshigiri.

To that fact, I don't have a favorite shinken for kata....I use a fairly heavy iaito.

My favorite cutting swords at this point are the CAS Hanwei Shinto Elite, the Tiger Elite and the Preying Mantis....of those for your dollar, and what I perceive as net gains for you, the Tiger Elite has most of it, makes a GREAT study piece and can be had online for around $1,200.

THAT said, inspection is ALWAYS necessary.

Hopefully, this very basic recommendation gives you some direction.

Best Regards,

I would recommend that you talk to your instructor since he / she knows what you are going to be doing one would assume they would know the most about what you need to be purchasing.

the idea of a person with minimal training using Shinken for Iaido is terrifying to me.

Get yourself a good iaito and spend a year or so learning before you ever buy shinken. It's very hard to learn proper form once you've cut your leg off.

I practice Iai and recently bought an amazing Iaito from tozando it is
almost like a shinken, soon I will have to buy a shinken and I do recomend geting a
japanese blade, it might be really expencive but it will last long enough for your
grate grand children to practice with it.:)

Iaito from tozando are top quality.

Paul chen/Hanwei has them as well...

My tozando sword is a beauty and I have a folded (chinese) blade that fits into its furniture for cutting.

I strongly recommend using an iaito for all practice within your first 6-12 months...

I agree with you completely. Using a Shinken for Iaito would most likely result in my hands looking like German sliced schinken
